Favourite fillums

Renamed in memory of John Hawksworth, a stalwart member who passed this day 2nd August 2020. RIP Mr Monkeybutt.

Sadly we must add the name of Kevin Minton, Aka Mr Ripper who passed 30/6/22. Kev was also Mr politically incorrect but a nicer lad you could never meet.

with a title like that many younsters will think its really OTT fiction when they think of our train services now. Midnight replacement bus service would add some reality to it.

Here’s one. Slade in Flame.

It came to mind as a kind of joke but it is in fact a very good film and recognised by critics as one of the best rock band fiction films ever.

It’s gritty, with a number of true stories mixed in that paint an accurate picture of a band being exploited and falling apart. It has some good music in too.

Midnight Express is a great film - but I then made the mistake of reading the book and 'Billy' is a right twat at the end of the true story.

The book was much better than the film, they can’t squeeze all the events into a film and the ending was different.

Back in the 70's in the days of two films being shown, I saw a 'B' fillum called 'Duel'.
I thought it was a great suspense film and it was not until thirty years later that I discovered that the director was Steven Spielberg. With a minimal cast, Duel keeps one glued to the big screen demonstrating SS's skill that led to his great career.

There's a few good 'uns in there - so there should be if you pick 10

Training Day - one of Denzil Washington's best, along with Flight, but he's worth watching in every film he makes.

funny mentioning a B fillum or a second feature as they were called. Usually not much more than one hour in length there was less padding out and kept you interested unlike some long drawn out main feature did. back in the days of only having 2 channels to watch i remember an old fil director being interviwed who stated even back then there was research into how long the average person can concentrate in the cinema. it was more or less 90 minutes which is possibly why most lasted about that long at the time.

That's one possible explanation. The other is that each reel of 35mm film used for cinema projection lasted about 45 minutes. 90 minutes or a bit less became the standard fillum length because it was cost effective - it had to be a film by big-name director or a Biblical epic to justify the expense of going longer

it can be more than just a coincidence that these really long high budget stuff started to come out when cinema visiting was getting less and less a popular past time. possibly trying something different to woo the audiance by their increased length and use of colour at every single opportunity. for me films became more visual with poorer dialogue from those days onward.

I recently went to watch Killers of the Flower Moon which is three and a half hours long - while it’s a decent film it is way too long in my opinion. I was thinking of going to see Napoleon which is two hours and forty minutes but it doesn’t get great reviews.

They do it to give their films a bit of extra credence and make the public think they are watching a classic rather than a standard offering. I’m not sure they always live up to it though.

It’s been a trend for years stretch mediocre films and TV drama’s further then a bunjee rope to improve it’s status.

With a decent sized TV you can watch a good film at home now.

The fire on, glass of wine, nobody chomping crisps or wibbly wobbling around on a creaky chair. I've caught up on some classics over the lockdown period like this and enjoyed it.

The thing I like about the Cruel sea had little ‘ Hollywood Style’ action or bullshit but gave a good grounding of the men who manned the ships.

I went to see Napoleon. To really appreciate it you need to have some idea about Napoleons career. the battle scenes were very realistic, unfortunately the colour was very dark even the daylight shots were dingy. I was impressed with the Vue , the recliner seats are very comfortable and spacious

Realistic? Every shot from a cannon in the entire fillum is explosive. You'd don't have to read much about Napoleonic warfare to know that roundshot (solid cannon balls) was used far more frequently in battles. It's the usual Hollywood stuff - lots of big bangs (but enough about Josesphine's bedroom) and gimmicks like an entire army disappearing under a frozen lake. Last time I saw that it was a horde of nasty Anglo-Saxons chasing King Arthur's brave lads.

it will be more realistic than the next version where napoleon or wellington and josephine will be played by a person of colour.

What about ‘A Matter of Life or Death’ with David Niven as the bomber pilot who should have died…really exercises your imagination.

Plus those 1950’s Dickens classics featuring John Mills and the Oliver Twist one with Alec Guinness….. and the best of all, Scrooge with Alistair Simms.
