Aye the wife was on about going last night oddly enough…and the Hurtigruten….another one she wants to try….explained it’s basically Norwegian postmen on a ship and she’d be bored after about the 40th fijord…she said she’ll see her mates to organise it![]()

When I’m down on the Solent and the teatime shuffle of liners depart Southampton..vulgar monstrosities looking like multi story car parks which are glorified floating resorts slide past…must be a fecking nightmare…go for a smaller vessel going to somewhere of interest….not the usual crap at the usual locations.
The bigger the ship, the further out you are from where you want to visit as the new monsters are now having to berth at locations like oil refineries because of the vessels drought and length…a bit like docking at Seal Sands for York.

I can’t see the pleasure of a cruise, been once, never again, bored shitless on the evening, it was like working offshore only I was paying them.

its not just the boredom its that dress code many have when you want to have a meal later in the day. if you have a holiday on the mainland you can pack up and go home if you are bored but not in the middle of the ocean.

First your an expert of life in Thailand now on cruises Snowy both of which you have never experienced, maybe a tramp steamer though, the cruise ship left from Venice, it never had to dock at any oil refineries etc, where did you read that Snowy ?They are banned from Venice now, Greek Islands, Athens and Croatia,(Dubrovnic, Split)I dont class them as crap locations, the locations weren't the problem, I visited some very very interesting historical places. It was the time spent on the vessel, whilst from the outside it looks huge internally it felt very claustrophobic, made up of accommodation, restaurants etc. and not much else.
It’s ideal if you want to visit loads of different locations over a short period of time, you didn’t really have much time in each port to mooch around. In general the majority of the passengers were American. By just after 9 at night the entertainment areas etc were deserted, like the Marie Celeste, after being fed and watered the passengers disappeared to their cabins ready for the next port of call.

Oh if you only knew little man…..carry on airing your ignorance…..
‘Tramp steamers’…are you living in a time warp in the 1950’s.![]()
When you know least you print the most.
I spent six years plotting vessels courses and still have an ‘interest’..sad.
Snowy wrote:The ultra large vessels whose DWT and GRT are now getting excessive and becoming popular with the mass market are unable to dock where liners used to dock so they dock at commercial berth’s further out and use shuttle coaches to take people to their destination.
I plotted the charts for the Navy….and at least if the glorified sat navs that are in use nowadays break down I can still get you there using the reliable ‘ Eye Ball Mk1’ and a pen and paper.
Snowy wrote:Dead reckoning or the stars…radar was coming into play more and flying on fixed beams to a target or area and locating the point of interest by cross beams or dead reckoning on speed, distance to travel headwind etc to be accounted for in the mix, the navigator earned his money that’s for sure
