Me too! But i came acroos some right nasty bastards, And some who were there to make up the numbers.
To be transparent, I was not keen on school at any age.

We had a Physics teacher who specialised in grabbing the hair next to your ear and banging your head on the desk…..it did encourage you not to be a smart arse though.

I had 1 excellent proper topclass teacher who had respect for every pupil who was prepared to listern & learn. Most others teachers average ( good days n bad days depending on hangovers & rows with wives / husbands ) and then I had around 8 male and 1 female teacher who were total sadistic bastards who would have been jailed for cruelty to children if CCTV was avaliable back then. We had P.E. body builder type teacher who loved to try to make any lad cry by cruelty in front of the rest of us. And sometimes he managed that with a grin, but a lot of us would be stubborn as hell and just grit our teeth rather than show him weakness. The punishment he would dish out was for not winning exercise etc He would ask 20 odd lads to do any routine he fancied in the gym and end up caning everyone who finished outside the first 5 for example. The stubborn hardened lads let the weaker lads finish infront because we hated the humiliation these quiet lads got put through. It really was that horrible but strangely you did get used to it as the norm. You know what despite arthritis now starting in my fingers & knuckles which I believe was down to getting the cane hundreds of times sometimes 6 of the best, it did me no real harm overall.

Wally Clark: Absolute ( a word rhyming with hunt) I remember him yelling at a group of us queuing (probably pushing and shoving, I admit) to get through a door " Just because you live like pigs you dont have to behave like pigs", he yelled at us. No need for that. He was evil and hated kids.

All my Teachers at Dykey were great.

Especially Mr Whatshisname and Mrs Thingamybob.

remember being told that school was the best days of our lives. after hearing that i,m surprised that child suicide wasn,t through the roof. funny though that lasses seemed to enjoy it more than us.

Of course they enjoyed it, they never got the strap.
Mind you it would be a laugh to take some of the cocky little shits you encounter nowadays to see how long they survived in the shark infested waters of school as it was.

For a while I went to a truly awful school in the south. A place called Haslemere in fact.

The headmaster was an absolute sadistic fruitcake who virtually ended up having a breakdown one morning in assembly in front of the whole school. He gave me the slipper, as he did many others. The highlight for me was seeing him pushed into the grotty school pool one sports day, by a girl who was never seen again.

School days for me were pretty shit.

There was a mix for me some good some bad. There was one teacher who had a terrific pair........just like two zeppelins in a dead heat!

Oh yeah, I remember them. They were alright although Mrs Thingamybob only arrived when I was in the fifth year so I didnt ave her much. If I remember rightly she replaced Mrs Oojimaflip who went on maternity leave.

Was she the wife of a certain uncompromising Pools Centre half?

At Jesmond Road, Harry Fenton frequently brought Pools into his lessons. For example he would talk about his army days and seeing fish in streams in Pools colours. The most scary was Pop Law who could really wield the cane when something trivial upset him.

Bloomin eck.....what did he do if something serious upset him?

I put the bad ones to the back, the good ones you never forget, however I can’t for the life of me remember my CSE English teachers name in 1975 at Brierton, but a good guy. We read ‘kes’ and he gave us each a part to read out. Personally did so well they moved me to O level English and we did Twelfth night, hated the bearded ‘bard’sted then, even more now.
Another canny bloke who taught us PE, then years later taught me to teach.

There were certain vindictive teachers you couldn’t please…..our Art teacher told me I wouldn’t be entered for my Art GCE O level despite me being second top in the class every term which well pissed me off.
I mentioned it to the old girl and she went into Viking mode and stormed into see the Headmaster…she showed him my reports and the fact the Art teacher had used my ceramics in the school’s entry to an exhibition.
The Headmaster agreed.
Next Art lesson the teacher takes me aside to tell me he’’s had a rethink and I can enter but thought I’d end up disappointed (which resulted in a Ginger on turbo boost) and got an ‘A’……never saw the bastard again just to smile.

thing with teachers is when you leave school or close to the end of leaving they are quite human. played hockey with a good number of them with hours in their company on trips across the pennines pre M62. Just before me and my mates left we were all either 16 or 17 and in the pub. a group of teachers came in and there was no escape route but we got away with due to us just drinking and talking in a group and behaving as we should and not in a noisy manner.
