It’s a known FACT that the opening times of Verrills are locked away on a secure vault in Whitehall guided by laser beans n stuff.
Three key holders are needed to open the world’s biggest safe with the times inside.
It’s based on the tide table height divided by the air pressure then multiplied by the angle of Earth title at 5 am ….pretty straightforward. bbolt

It's because they are arguably the best fish shop in town they have a little leeway. I have probably tried most if not all in past few months just to see who is the best. Verrills come out on top for me like

Would love to try them, haven’t been there for donkeys but I remember that they were consistently excellent. Every time we visit the Headland the place is firmly closed though.

The fish shop I would say are better is the Wetherby Whaler. Must admit haven't been for 5/6 years but when the good weather finally arrives I will be popping down for Haddock Chips and peas bread and tea special. Two years ago I went to a auction in Jedburgh and we went to a fish shop at bottom of the hill ( cannot remember name ) but it was by far and away the very best fish n chips I have ever tasted. Funny thing even her indoors agreed possibly the first time in 28 years  I may be tempted to have a run up soon even though its a bit of a journey.

The thing I don't like about all the fish shops is the huge increase in what is basically home made gravy and curry. All costs have gone through the roof but I think the fish shops have very cleverly taken full advantage when it comes to the above. Afterall the real increase in the powders etc won't be a lot at all when you consider the amount of cartons filled by one pot. Some are £1.30 others £1.90 for small cartons. They no longer do larger ones because its massive profit keeping them one size and that's small. It used to be about 60p / 70p for this small size ( before covid ) if memory serves. banghead

It’s an expensive do now, I never twigged on how the prices shot up so much with Covid, as the only increase was fuel, but it never affected it in the past with big fuel rises.
I truly believe businesses are trying to recoup what they lost during the shutdowns and are milking us the public….because they can get away with it.

I hope you're right and it's just businesses recouping losses. But the problem after that is do you honestly believe these businesses are really going to drop the prices back down now we are so used to paying them sctatchinghead Asda and the likes will never give up the billions extra, the best we can hope for is a price freeze because they ain't coming down thats certain. Infact I will predict a slow price rise year on year and the little businesses will simply follow suit. The only companies that may drop prices are taxi firms etc when or if the fuel prices drop. The rest particularly food related companies big and small will not be coming down in my opinion. banghead

Asda is a good example of why the prices will remain. The two brothers who bought them out ( except 10% kept by Walmart ) for what I believe was £100 million for 100 stores. Around £90 million was loaded with huge interest onto Asda which left the company struggling particularly after covid even though the brothers invested more money and amalgamated Asda with there own companies. Then suddenly the Russian war appeared and profits shot through the roof so much so the brothers now had a company making billions profit a year. Those brothers have won the jackpot and it came at a time when things looked bleak. No way they are going to struggle again after that "get out of jail card " landed. They have found wonkers golden ticket and are not about to throw it away. They are very successful because they are ruthless when it comes to making money.

You have got to get there at 11 am and join the small numbers of people like me who have lunch early. A half lot at £5.60 is enough. Yum yum

I think it is the best chippy in the town.
Living in one of the most land locked towns in the country it's one of the things I most look forward to when I'm home as inland chippies are normally shite and woeful at best.

I would also give notable mentions to Foster's on Oxford Road and The Odd Cod on Duke Street.

The last time I had a Verrills was actually by accident - in that it was unplanned.

After a day out, having a drive round the Headland with my Mum at about half 2 on a Tuesday afternoon (a Kennedy being shot moment), having been along the seafront past Andy Capp and the Pothouse, to our obvious shock we spotted it was OPEN. Neither of us had been hungry up untill that point, but was a complete no brainer and we weren't disappointed, it was superb!

On a side note - are Half- Lots and Fish Fritters just a Hartlepool thing, as have not seen either anywhere else? sctatchinghead

A friend of mine who is on a budget recommends fish fritters as a meal. I got one from the Almighty Cod in Seaton for £2.40 and it was filling.
So if you are there get a Haddock chips etc for yourself and a fritter for your better half.

I think it is the best chippy in the town.

Neither of us had been hungry up untill that point, but was a complete no brainer and we weren't disappointed, it was superb!

other places have em but under a different name. verrills is good and would always have been back in the days that most were good and the things actually stayed warm when you ate them. i,m a fast eater but many seem to cool off quick now. in general i avoid fish now as even in yorkshire good ones are getting rarer and even if you get a pie they microwave it to a soggy mess. is this why they all sell curry sauce and gravy just to hide the taste of leathery chips and soggy batter cooked in used duckhams 20/50 or can be cooked in diesal fuel. as for verrills opening times i feel if they had to open night and day to make money it would be better to swerve it as they,d be crap.
