that sums it up really without another comment except having a name in life is better than having ability and he could easily just rely on others to give him success by just being a figurehead.

In my day most people got employed not by what they knew but by people who they knew, you had to be in the loop.

Rooney could be doing bugger all. He could go abroad and play golf for years like Keegan did or just stagnate.

It least he’s got a work ethic and wants to achieve something.

Or just maybe he is obsessed with wealth. You would be surprised how many multi millionaires want more and more money. I was once offered a job by George Reynolds back in the 80s and during the meeting in his boardroom at Direct Worktops ( huge long table with him on one end and a giant soft pig at the other end ) and talked about " oh yes George " he told me his rag to riches stories and how he became obsessed with working and making more and more money. He said he never stops working and goes in 7 days a week. I asked why he didn't take at least 6 months a year off, he explained that when you start with nothing and work your way up to being a multi millionaire it's impossible to stop working and therefore you make more and more money. He said he would be the richest man in the North within 5 to10 years and wont stop until he was the richest man in England. I found him to be a really nice friendly bloke to chat with but he did keep spitting on his lush pile carpet and simply rubbing it in with his foot during the meeting. I had to ask him why the pig in the boardroom and he said and I quote " when I sit here during meetings I look down the table and its always there to remind me of my ex wife ". I never took the job because he offered me silly money and I always thought if its too good to be true leave it alone. Silly thing was I recommend a good friend for the job who was well qualified
and in between jobs. He worked for George for 5 years and was paid a huge sales based salary with all the trimmings and George treated him like a son. Goes to show I definitely got that offer wrong. I went to see the talk in with Goffy and George in a workman's club off Brenda Road ( cannot recall the name ) around 2012 when he was skint. We chatted afterwards and I reminded him of when he offered me the job and straight away he told me my Christian name and the company he tried to steal me from. And yes once again the same George a real nice and friendly bloke infact nothing changed about his whole persona.

A work ethic has to be admired, but a work ethic that produces something.
Management and playing are completely different roles…a bit like a Porter in a hospital becoming a surgeon because they’re in the same business.

over the years there have been so many top players who have proved that statement to be totally correct. know for a fact that its not too easy to manage players who are below the level of what you once where. those with sense look for an easier job outside the game where you will not get the sack after a few games you lose.

both of you are correct. mind you its ok getting a job but can they in the end have the ability to do it and there is always somebody above them whose patiance will wear out.

I’ve heard he’s colouring his head in with a waterproof felt tip.

Yes exactly Kev  He had a reputation even as far back as then but I would be disrespecting him if I told the story any other way. I have usually found people to be a lot different to what some say about them. He paid my mates mortgage off just over £38,000 and that was 3 years after he had moved on to become self employed. He is godfather to one of his kids who was born 4 years after he left. My mate Mike told me George was brilliant with him even when he told him he wanted to change direction and go self employed. Infact he was over the moon my mate was willing to " jump in and learn to swim " in the first place. My mate eventually moved back to Devon ( his original home ) and never seen George in person again..but George always transferred £250 every birthday for his godson...And would ring Mike every single new year's eve ( pissed ) to have a catch up.

If he wore a Gregory Porter, he’d be a dead ringer for a tellytubby!

At least he'll be able to sign a player now... He's been the polar opposite of a Chelsea manager...

Fair to say that the locals aren’t happy about it. Every Argyle fan I’ve spoken to thinks they’re nailed on for relegation.

I question the mindset of those who sign him on as manager.
It’s like the board is made up of Church of England vicars who’s knowledge of the game is severely limited and could only think of ……‘that chap Rooney or Stanley Matthew’s if he’s available?’
