Blyths but not cheap. You go in for a pound of sausage and end up with tons of stuff and £30 the lighter.

Blyths has some good stuff, but I agree it's not cheap.

There is a wholesale butchers in Stockton called Town & Country Butchers, just off Portrack Lane, which is similar to Bolam's. I go there now as Bolam's prices have shot up recently.

Try Ayres on Northgate down the Headland…the steak pies are to die for but go early.
I pop in if I’m down there with the dogs…and you can’t beat proper mince, not the supermarket cack…..

do the same when i,m up and all their stuff is cheaper and some better than what i can get close to me. like the stuff taylors sell at blackhall also and funny enough it tastes better than the stall they have on stockton market on a saturday. there is a meat stall there but its not brilliant but fine if thats all you can afford especially if you are like us and cannot tell the difference of pork from a cheap piece to an expensive one. beef however is different.

John the Butcher, on Davidson Drive (behind the General) was superb- excellent value for a decent product. Think he might have retired now so not sure if it's still there?

My Mum also used to go to Delifare (I think it was called) on York Road - Think it was opposite the Tackle/Gun Shop. Though that must be at least 25 years ago sctatchinghead

Ginger Hubbard's on Mulgrave Road - (just along from A&S News) was decent and my Dad would nip in there as he knew him well

I’ll refresh your memory what a butcher does, a person whose trade is cutting up and selling meat in a shop, they might sell pies as a side line, they are not pie makers that’s bakers like Greggs etc.

Well what are we discussing, because that sentence tells us we’re discussing nothing.
Who set the ‘guidelines’ by the way…I mentioned steak pies earlier and Morrell’s picnic pork pies are beautiful…..and all contain…meat.

I would have thought we would be discussing lamb, pork, steaks, chicken etc but it’s turned into the best pies in town. I can’t personally comment on pies as I never eat them never have done, I like to see what I am eating not some thing hidden in pastry.

How do you know you’re not eating horse meat when you buy a nice steak.

Agree 100%, I had a couple of Morrell’s pork pies last week. Although still quite tasty they were pale imitations of Morrell’s pies back in the day. Not only was there a complete absence of juice there was barely any jelly either. Not everyone wants a pork pie consisting of 100% pork meat - however I am guessing that trading standards or some obscure still extant EU law dictates that modern day pork pies do not need to be tasty as long as they meet the requisite standard.

Snowy I am having an end of season giggle as well unfortunately posters on here take me seriously and according to Derwent have reported me in the past which led to a ban.
I have eaten horse meat a few times, nought wrong with it, steaks and stews, no idea why people think why there is some thing wrong with eating horse meat as long it says horse meat on the menu or the label.

If I go there it’s usually about 7.00 when they’re hot and there’s juice galore, with the resultant damage, a pasty’s easier

because like dogs they are thought of as pets. just think for a minute you had a horse for years, it died or was sent to the knackers yard and later you ate horsemeat. its really doubtful but you could be tucking into your old friend. we do not have that closeness with animals reared for food, but would admit if it tasted good i,d give cats a go in my stew, dead of course.

If you're up Durham way try the butcher in the farm shop at Broomhouse Farm off the road to Lanchester. Cracking meat from the farm, a bit (but not too much) more expensive than the high street butcher but their diced mutton is to die for if you like to make a curry.

Wasn’t there instances years ago when the first Chinese/Indian places opened they found dead carcasses of cats, dogs when they got raided by the Food Hygiene people ? There was one place where they were using tins of dog meat, they said the cook had poor eyesight and couldn’t understand what it said on the tin.

That's correct Jamie. One of the Chinese takeaways was raided ( in Church St ? ) and Alsation dogs found hanging on metal meat hooks.

but how many actually got ill from eating in those places. more spices that they add to food makes it more difficult to tell what you are eating especially if its covered in some sort of sauce. just gives the poncy places reasons to charge more if its advertised as being infused by something you have little idea or have ever seen what it is. cat and dogs might taste fine and the food made for them could also be tasty. if one of those jamie oliver types used say pedigree chum in a french named dish the poor dogs who ate it would starve the next day as their owners would be tucking into it and the supermarkets would quadruple the price.
