Just watched a meeting between the supporters and Chairman on YouTube ( 2 months old ). The Chairman said some very interesting things about players etc. He said regardless what division Boreham Wood ended up in he was going to have cut the wage bill because of the low crowds and high wages. He was talking about offering three players and one staff member ( not manager ) a new one year contract and the cost was over £400,000 for the four. Best thing was that did not include agent payments etc. He said its far more difficult than supporters realise to sign players nowadays because you no longer talk one on one to the player but instead speak to the brother or father ( agents). He basically said football is foooked up with average players demanding high wages. The three players mentioned demanded a 40% / 45% wage increase to simply re- sign for the club. banghead

its been fooked up for years since the maximum wage was abolished for the average players. in the 70,s and 80,s many at the poorer clubs were paid proportunetly less than those of that era were. then the days of all the sponsorship and tele money came into it they were like he said demanding the earth. what really has made the game better with all that but the increase of players wage demands and clubs getting into a financial mess but actually received more money than they ever have had.

It's players wages that is killing clubs finances, it annoys me when former pro's come out with "it's only a short career, get it while you can" quotes, it leaves nothing in the pot for ground improvements, youth schemes, initiatives etc. I've said it before the FA should introduce a 10% cut right across the board for professional footballers in this country, then the ones who are earning silly money will be hit the hardest, freeing up money at all clubs to invest in other things or maybe show a profit for a change, it would also attract other people into club ownership which has become solely the domain of the incredibly wealthy in the last few decades.

Pro’s can do what others do in that position (like the forces), and get a job when your football careers over ….don’t sit on your arse, plan ahead like us mere mortals have to.

they know this when they sign their first contract and there is help from the PFA when they finish unlike other jobs where once you leave you are chucked on the street. then there are the contacts they can make whilst playing. i,m sure if we had a business we,d give a job to an ex player if there was one available.

Depends on the player, depends on the job.

You need £100,000 a year just to rent a 1 bedroom flat in places like Boreham Wood.

But you don't need to live in Boreham Wood to play football for them.

Absolutely but there's decent public transport link so I'm much more reasonable homes are within commuting distance.
