Has anyone driven less miles than me?

From 27 February and since that date I have only driven less than 180 miles.

Started car in garage this morning as haven't driven since first Friday in December.

I will soon wonder whether I would be better getting rid of it and using taxis when I need to leave the house.

I do more than that, in one direction, when I travel to see my Mum who still lives in the town- just shy of 200 door to door..a round trip to work and back is about 30 miles, 5 days a week.
My Mum will only drive in the town- mainly to go shopping or the doctors, so imagine her milage will be similarly on the low side.

Suppose you have to weigh it up- it's the convenience of being able to versus the cost of keeping the car on the road, taxed, MOT'd and insured. Potentially might be cheaper getting taxis. The taxis in Hartlepool are very reasonable in terms of cost- reckon they must be some of the cheapest in the country. Were as where I live in Northants - you have to put your eyes back in, after every journey!

I average 10k a year, have done for years, but this year down to 8k…only realised because the cars in for it’s teast next week.
Funny but had cars on and off but when Stagecoach took over the buses I bought a car within six months to save money after constant fare increases and even more so when they revised routes and time tables it became impractical.

do not quite make 10k between both of us and share the load between the 3 cars we have. no i,m not part of pools takeover as the cost of purchase of all three was less than two and a half grand with two having less than 50k on the clock when we got them but pne was 20 and the other 30 years old at the time. is it worth having 3 i do not know when tax and insurance work out about a tenner a week if you never use them. thing is i,d end up no better off without em like when you pack in smoking it seems to go somewhere else.

For me it is the complete opposite to work life.

Many years as Sales Manager I would drive upwards of 30,000 miles per year.

In later (and last) years of employment I was General Manager, travelling from home which was a 40 mile return journey, with 4 days a week in office but every Thursday I would drive a transit van to Brighton & back, doing close to 400 mile return journey. In total about 560 miles per week.

I have to say I don't really miss the driving now, with loads more traffic and plenty more speed cameras.

I avoid motorways where possible now, only decent one is the M6 form Preston to Carlisle and there is no bigger frustration then the M1 on a Friday afternoon…till you get past Leeds.

i,ll take motorways and dual carriageways any day over roads where overtaking is a near impossibility and you are stuck behind some crawler that even holds tractors up. harrogate to ripon comes into mind plus harrogate to home whichever way you go.

I was just discussing this over the Xmas period with family. 3,803 miles between MOTs!

They were discussing EVs (as 2 in the extended family now) while I was saying I probably don't even need a car for 90% of the year let alone one which costs £600 a month.

I'm one of those people (we know who we are) who keeps a note of all expenditure during the year so can see I spent £2,102 on garage bills, vehicle tax, fuel and insurance last year. That's 55p a mile.

I do about 3700 a year and that works out costly when you factor in the depreciation and the chauffeur.

My only concession petrol wise is never to fill the tank beyond half full for journey’s around town, no use lugging all the weight of petrol for no gain.

When the price of petrol fluctuates, mostly going up, half the time, is that a false economy?

Monday, half full, petrol, say £1.37 per litre, come next Monday it's gone up to £1.40 per litre.

That rise of 3p a litre over, say half a tank = 30 litres = 90p. Nipping round town you might save 75/80p with this extra weight. No saving really?

Even at your generous assessment, that 10p saving ain’t gonna cause me no sleepless night, plus, petrol doesn’t fluctuate that much to make it a practical problem and the impact of half a tank weight will lower your mileage around town and drive quality …..
I still laugh at idiots years ago who’d queued up on budget days to fill their tanks for a one off saving of coppers.
