You brought back some nice memories with that Kettering

Your welcome Leggie!

I think Gary McDonald, Steve Tupling, and Paul Olsson made their debuts and we were a completely different team from the shit show Captain Bob had left us with, when he sailed off into the sun.

I'm sure Cyril had them training at Greyfields (like Cloughie) and on the pitch down by the Power Station. Suppose Cyril was very much like Cloughie in his approach- and always thought about what might have been had he not passed when he did.

Also, Gibson bouncing the cheque to his widow, provided me with what I can say is the only time I've been truly ashamed of our club.

Yep and Ian Bennyworth.....think we beat Grimbsy 4-2 a few days later over xmas.

Gibson yes, but not the club. We are the club. He was just passing through on the eternal tide of owners, managers and players.

Gibson also provided that big £200,000 false cheque in the fail when he took over. He had no avaliable cash but simply got his bank to give him that big cheque to bullshit the fans. The 2 directors at the time did not even bother to make sure he had that kind of cash to invest and instead signed the club over and got rid of the problem.

The Ipswich replay at the Vic- I'm sure it was really foggy, and the game was in some doubt- I was on the Mill House terrace and was struggling to see the corner flags. Then When they scored the opener, the fog lifted banghead

Honestly not sure - don't remember him playing that night- would have to check In the Mad Crowd. He might'have been with them then, though think he went there a year or two after. I used to live nextdoor to his uncle. Reckon that would have been early nineties '93 ish - when brother Andy was at Arsenal and winning it by himself!

Think Mark Venus played for them that night

Just checked John's site and David Linighan played both games that season against Pools Jan ,'92 - almost 32 years ago (that is frightening)!

No Mark Venus

Bob Newton scoring 2 goals in the last 15 minutes to get a draw away at Wigan in the FAC back in early 80s. I got over excited and started running across the pitch to celebrate with Bob only to be rugby tackled by a copper and put into a onsite jail cell in the tiny police station by the Sargent.

Hartlepool v Blackburn league Cup 1974. If I remember correctly they were top of division 3 and we near bottom of league 4. We finally beat them at home 1-0 ? Pretty sure it was after 3 draw games? I do remember our supporters coach getting its windows smashed after one of the draws.

Not quite remembered correctly. We beat Bournemouth in the 2nd round in the 3rd replay and then beat Blackburn in a replay at their place before being thrashed at Villa in a replay in the 4th round.

I managed to miss both goals….the wife couldn’t stand it up with the Gods and the steward said it’s quite normal and took her down to a special seating area at ground level, they have for such occasions. But he asked me to accompany me down to see where to pick her up at the end of the game….. so gallops down multiple flights of stairs miss goal No 1. eventually escape back, going up stairs, paggered then the second goal goes in …I push my way in and ask a kid who scared…he beamed back and said “we have!!!”…. sadx banghead banghead banghead banghead

Beating Hull away with 10 men to scrape into the play offs. Dodging rocks from the home fans who were stood talking to a couple of coppers in between shotting the clemmies at us.
Clarky had his best game ever on the left wing.

When I watch that match, I stop after our second goal:( obviously) but I’d never went past it into the shadowlands.
It was a long journey home sadx …but as we were dropped off opposite Lonns,…. a couple of pissheads decided it was time for them to sing the praises of Sunderland…..it didn’t end well, definitely not a time to be prodding the bears with headaches.

Mine was our 3-1 win at Hereford,we never used to beat them,in our 90/91promotion season.
Paul Dalton was unplayable that day.

That was a great game.
We were underneath the stand at the side of the pitch, which had the players tunnel.
At the end of the game,a few of us jumped onto the wire fence to celebrate with the players,Newton jumped on the other side, shouting 'I love you,you little fuckers!'

One of my most memorable games was at Edgar Street. 1996 I think. First time I saw Pools win. Hereford were on top all game and had what looked like a perfectly good goal chalked off for a foul by Uriah Rennie with about 5 minutes to go. Ball went forward from the free kick. I think it was Sean McAuley who got away down the left before squaring it to Buddy Halliday who lashed it into the net. Cue disbelief / pandemonium. To make it even better the still irate Hereford forward got his marching orders shortly after.

Be good to play there again - preferably in the Football League.

Remember going to Hereford and Pools winning but local thugs left the game early and slashed loads of tyres in the away carpark including buses. Somehow my car was one of only few that managed to escape. I know a lot of fans spent a small fortune getting a local tyre company out to replace tyres on a Saturday evening. I was chatting to a copper who said its a regular occurrence here and that he thought it was organised by the local tyre company.

This. I'd lived in Hull, moved back to Hartlepool then came down for the game. We needed about 3 results to go our way and us to win. Went 2-0 up, Strodder sent off by that shit ref who I always thought hated Pools. Then 3-0 up. I have distinct memory of Stephenson chesting a ball down on the right wing, volleying a 1st time crossfield pass to Clark (Ginger Ginola) on the left wing, who beat someone with a Cruyff turn, cross, nearly a goal. Thoughts of "am i dreaming"? Then random mad Hull fans trying to run across the pitch solo toward 1500 baying away fans before 'reluctantly' being led away by the police. Results all worked out. Leaving Boothferry Park to see a minibus of celebrating Pools fans in a minibus with smashed out windows, then a Hull fan screaming that he'd been CS sprayed in front of his 10 year old kid and it was all our fault.

It was a good day out that. Then Pools luck resurfaced vs Darlo in the playoffs.

Yes we got attacked in a black cab on way back to train station. One of those m  orons throw a bottle of lager into the open window and remarkably it went out the open window on the other side. How that bottle missed everyone is a real mystery but if it had hit one of us on the head it could well have been a murder charge. Thing is this win had no bearing on Hulls season. It does make you wonder how anyone could attempt to injury or possibly kill someone because they support another team.

It does make you wonder how anyone could attempt to injury or possibly kill someone because they support another team.

I thought you were going to say some one in the back seat caught it.

especially when really its just luck of geography or family who you actually support. doubt rhere is a single poolie born and bred say in watford with a family member supporting that towns team just decide that they,ll support pools or even hull for that matter. its there but for the grace of god who you support really unless you are a glory hunter and we are all in it together no matter what it says on your scarf. could never understand this hatred between fans even darlo and rochdale but its really hard though with the latter.

the wierdest game i ever saw was out play off semi final win at stockport where i could not celebrate our goal and win in fear of my future health. had to do with just a big smirk on my face leaving the ground with my lad thinking of suicide. just wonder if any other poolie managed to see that game live.

Pools 4-6 Wrexham has got to be the strangest game that I have witnessed live. Ugarte scoring 5 for them, wasn't he a mate of Xavi Alonso and only was at Wrexham because he wanted to live near Alonso while he was at Liverpool?

In the 70s we played away to Man City at main road and got hammered 6-0. George Potter and Dennis Tueart got send off for fighting in the centre circle. We took thousands of fans and had buses parked on both sides of the road as far as the eye could see outside the ground.
