Was looking back at old footage of Pools games last night. Despite our mostly miserable 115 year history we still have some wonderful memories of games / goals & players. The Darlo game at the " White Elephant " when we won 0-3 great game great goal by Effion & superb atmosphere.

It has to be the 91 promotion match against Northampton for me, great afternoon.
That 5-1 away tonking of Morecambe stuck in my mind because everything was perfect the whole day from start to finish from the travelling to the match and everything in between.

Beating Palace 2-1 at home in Jan '78. Palace took early lead and then Bob Newton scored two. Also agree with Snowy about beating Northampton 3-1 to win promotion.

That was the first time I had witnessed a promotion and it was an amazing experience to see. Baker Allon ( Mr Goals ) & Dalton if my memories are correct. Remember having the worst hangover ever next day but well and truly worth it.

Boyd's 3rd against Sheffield Wednesday has to be up there.
Also remember a header from the edge of the box by Rob Jones back in the day.

Remember Baker scoring a overhead kick from edge of big box (rinkend ) in 5-1 win but can't remember who we played.

Best 0-0 I ever saw was against Donny at The Vic on New Year's Day 1977. One Dennis Peacock was in goal for Donny and saved everything in a mud bath at the Rink End. Took stick but smiled and took it in good part. Never know how Pools never scored. The 1982 Milk Cup game when Pools beat Derby 4-2 against Archie Gemmill and co.

Best 0-0 I have seen was against Darlo in the 90/91 promotion season. Best goalkeeping display I have ever seen against us by Mark Prudhoe, if it wasn't for him in goal we would have scored at least 5 or 6, he was brilliant that day!!

That was about the coldest I’d been at a footy match, finished my shift at 2.30 and it was just over the road but deeply regretted changing from Doc Martins to ordinary shoes…. :angry-tappingfoot:

Funnily enough I arranged to meet my two lads aged 12 and 9 and I asked them at half time if their feet were cold…..and said no…. I must have been old at 37.
I just loved how Palace took defeat so graciously…not!! ….and despite what anyone says that was a penalty, nobody would even think about diving on that surface, it was dire.

Will always be the 1957 game against the Busby Babes 3 - 0 down after about 20mins and pulled back to 3 - 3 before losing 4 - 3. It was absoluting pouring down with a record Vic attendance of over 17000.

The number of people claiming to be at that match must have included foetuses or a glint in their Father’s eye……plus the crowd of 97,000…

Boydie bamboozling the Wendies in the rain is my best memory at the Vic, but for sheer heart-stopping joy nothing tops being at Bristol for the play-off win. Should have been the start of a new dawn for the club, but it doesn't change the moment Brad James pushed the last penalty onto the bar and it stayed out!

Not forgetting Cooper’s first match at Peterborough when we came back to win 4-3…one in the eye for fat Barry Fry and his prediction and the bloody heat there.

By far the best goalkeeping display I’ve ever seen was Andy Collett against us at feethams in the 90’s. It ended 1-1 but should have been 7-1 to us but for an out of this world performance by Collett.

Remember that one too. Can't imagine he had many better games as a keeper, otherwise he wouldn't have finished his career at Darlo.

I recall a wet Tuesday night match, and I'm pretty sure it was Len Ashurst who was ? manager and personally thanked the crowd over the tannoy before the game finished. So that would have been between 71 and 74, did we have a then lowest crowd which was even lower in the Stockport game?

I recall a Colchester game with a crowd in the 800’s in the early 80’s..a day of glorious sunshine and passing quick showers.
The 70’s, on a week to week average, were plainly poor crowd wise apart from the odd big game and the club’s survival was always a concern to me in the 70’s.

well i wasn,t as my old man would not allow me to go because of the crowd. forget more games than i remember including individual performances by players but remember a 4-3 at the vic in 64/5 season over stockport where for once i picked the right match to attend. always have classed myself as the club jinx.

Beating Crewe six two was a canny one back in 1980.

After our 2nd goal, a copper stood behind me at the back of the Rink End grabbed me by the neck and admonished me for being "over exuberant" with my goal celebrations. He said I'd regret it if I behaved like that again. He was as good as his word when Bob Newton hit the third, and dealt me a punch in the kidneys and the promise that I'd be arrested next time.

When Newton hit the fourth a few minutes later, I stood rooted to the spot, and shouted "Well done Robert, jolly good goal sir!"

The musker leaned forward, got his mouth close to my ear and asked me if I was taking the piss. "Of course not officer" I replied - while secretly wishing Harry Roberts would turn up.

Great game despite Prickson of Cock Green, and the first time I'd witnessed Pools scoring 5 goals in the first half. :)

Huddersfield's goalkeeper Alan Starling gave us the best smoking tabs display I've ever seen...!

One of the memorable players I saw was the late great Frank Worthington when he played for Tranmere.

I recall us singing "Frankie, give us a wave" - which he responded to - and lots of banter with the Rink End. I'm sure he walked over to the stand giving us all a one-man standing ovation at full-time.

Genuine 24-carat legend, and not one of the plastic ones who regularly get that accolade theses days.

That game always sticks in my mind, stood in the Rink End for the last game of the 1977/78 season, Hudders had nothing to play for but Starling must've been a secret Pools fan, I'm sure he let at least two of our goals in on purpose. In between eating a pie, drinking Bovril and smoking a tab, he was hilarious, their Manager must've been fuming after that game as we came from behind to win 3-2.

Looking on ITMC Starling played 7 times at the Vic for either Northampton or Huddersfield and we won all 7 games.
Thank you Alan, hope you are keeping well.

Hugh the Hammer almost breaking the Town End net against Lootown - never seen a ball hit so hard! Think that was Newell's return and Boydy scored a last minute penalty - what a night!

He loved a quality strike did Shuggy- that free kick he scored that had to be retaken and he put it in the same corner, just amazing!

Cyril Knowles first game in charge v Scarborough - 4-1 Boxing day win at the Vic. Sure we scored from 3 consecutive corners. Also think that game saw the launch of Monkey Business - Dec '89.

They mention John Rowlands in that article who was one of my favourite players in watching Pools for the past fifty years. The best header of a football I have ever seen, once saw him score with his head from the edge of the 18 yard box.

Your welcome Leggie!

I think Gary McDonald, Steve Tupling, and Paul Olsson made their debuts and we were a completely different team from the shit show Captain Bob had left us with, when he sailed off into the sun.

I'm sure Cyril had them training at Greyfields (like Cloughie) and on the pitch down by the Power Station. Suppose Cyril was very much like Cloughie in his approach- and always thought about what might have been had he not passed when he did.

Also, Gibson bouncing the cheque to his widow, provided me with what I can say is the only time I've been truly ashamed of our club.

RIP

They mention John Rowlands in that article who was one of my favourite players in watching Pools for the past fifty years. The best header of a football I have ever seen, once saw him score with his head from the edge of the 18 yard box.

Have to agree with you there, Rowlands was your typical aggressive hardcase centre half, he Billy Ayre, George Smith and Mick Tait were all in that mould.

Cyril Knowles first game in charge v Scarborough - 4-1 Boxing day win at the Vic. Sure we scored from 3 consecutive corners. Also think that game saw the launch of Monkey Business - Dec '89.

I always looked forward to the original Monkey Biz. Happy days.
