What on earth can be done with all these empty churches throughout the country?
Some too good to be demolished yet too expensive to maintain.

Isn’t the Church of England one of the biggest land owners in England, as far as empty churches are concerned most will just fall into ruin as there will be no one to maintain them or if anyone has the cash convert them into home.

I got a surprise when I passed St Cuthbert’s church and realised it was closed…if the Catholics are giving up it must be bad.

I often looks at Saint Georges in York Road near to Titan house and think that would make one hell of a Wetherspoons :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Tbh there were too many churches in the last century with a plethora of different denominations, tiny little villages with populations of a couple of hundred and 4 churches, 3 of which will now be empty or turned into residential accommodation, the fourth struggling to attract congregations of a dozen or more.

my local one only gets a decent congregation for things like autumn and spring fairs and the thursday lunch they provide that costs donations only. pity i am an atheist as the vicar and curate are a good laugh and deserve a better turn out for the work they do. one thing when talking to them both are certainly not woke by a long shot.

Aye, in the top three I believe.

Why don't they do the Christian thing and open them for homeless people to doss in..?

Fucking greedy hypocrites the lot of them. One thing is for certain, if you're hoping to find God/Jesus, you'll be wasting your time visiting a church.

with you on that quote but others should divorce themselves from the ones at the top in charge of the churches to those who work in them who do the best they can for the poor and homeless that they are allowed to do. they have bosses and so do their bosses which is the problem.

Or when couples want a Church wedding with the siblings acting as bridesmaids etc., bit hypocritical really.

and sums up even more those who use it for weddings and christenings because they want a big show about it and can afford all the charges churches make and the added extras on the list of charges. then there is the church funerals that are more for the relitives left behind than the person who the funeral is for. many could not give a damn about the views of the person that died but just their own.

Forgot about Christenings and Funerals, my ex wanted a Church Wedding and a Church Christening, none of the 2 of us ever set foot in a church again, my daughter is a totally non believer. If there is a God out there she says why are they so many atrocities going on on the planet.
Try explaining that to a Jehovah’s Witness or a Mormon on the doorstep, you could be there for hours.

Two Jehovah’s Witnesses turn up at a house, knock on the door and a man opens the door and immediately invites them in… they follow him into his front room and they are asked to sit down and make them selves comfortable on a huge settee, they open their briefcases and show him various pamphlets which he accepts from them and insists on giving them money for the free pamphlets…he then asks them if they’d like a cup of tea which they agree to and while he’s in the kitchen he pops his head round to ask if they’d like a toasted tea cake which they nod to….he comes back with the tray and after giving them their tea and toasted tea cake he looks them in the face and says….” And tell me, what are you here for ?”
The two men look at each other…the oldest one turns and looks at the man and says…”We don’t know, we’ve never got this far before”.

I credit that eight years of grammar school with nourishing me in a direction where I could trust myself and trust my instincts. They gave me the tools to reject my faith. They taught me to question and think for myself and to believe in my instincts to such an extent that I just said, 'This is a wonderful fairy tale they have going here, but it's not for me.' [George Carlin in the New York Times - 20 August 1995
