Blast from the past

Renamed in memory of John Hawksworth, a stalwart member who passed this day 2nd August 2020. RIP Mr Monkeybutt.

Sadly we must add the name of Kevin Minton, Aka Mr Ripper who passed 30/6/22. Kev was also Mr politically incorrect but a nicer lad you could never meet.

No one mentioned Crossroads - assuming that was your guilty pleasure, Benny sctatchinghead

As for Brookside - not aware that I ever recorded it however it would have been on VHS using a Scotch video tape ('Re record, not fade away') for the record! yawn2

Remember we had an old dude with thick NHS glasses who cleaned our windows for years- he was a proper old pro, with fag balanced on his lip as he leaned out off his ladder. He must have been worth a fortune as used to see him across the town.

Being dragged down Oxford Road by me mam to get a haircut off Keith "Killer" Graham.

Not long after I met my future ex-wife, she invited me to a Tuesday night at the United Services Club in Miers Avenue - and I'm sure it was him who was one half of "Keith on the organ and Billy on the drums".

Could be my mind playing tricks on me, but if it was him, he was a better organist than he was a fucking barber..!!!

Queens Rink where most met their future wives, and big band Friday nights with the cream of the country’s dance bands such as Ted Heath, Ken McIntosh, Eric Delaney appeared. Also The Empire I saw a very young John Barry with his group who turned into a great composer.

Wesley Wilburn - used to write to the Mail under the name of Nuf Said.
Remember a story about him going to buy a nice juicy steak from the butcher's in the covered market. Anything for the wife, Wes ?
Nah - she can have a tin of Chappie.
Think he used to have the contract to clean the windows in Middleton Grange.

Frido plastic balls great for floating corners and similar to what they play with today in the money league and the football league. Stylo Matchmaker footy boots the best ever and believe Kev Johnston may have worn them. Billy Horner's contract has it finished yet? Steetleys particularly the chimmney which was Hartlepool's most iconic landmark. The yellow smoke that blew across town when the wind was coming from the east from Steetley's. That ship you could see for years moored over the Clarence road wall in the docks. Duplicate green United buses that took you to and from Crimdon Dene. Gadges at Pools wearing proper flat caps. British West Hartlepool. Eddie Edgar. Seaton baths so warm not like leisure centre pools today. Bruce Moore and Gents tackle shop. Everything in Church Street. Ah such memories.

The Santa Bus - remember it driving down Clarence Road during midweek game before the Cyril Knowles Stand was put in and all you could see was the sleigh moving, as the Bus was the same height as the fence!

Pubs that had an "off-door" attached to them.

Shops that would sell a nine-year old 10 tabs if they had a note from their mam.

Arrows made of bamboo with playing-cards for flights that you launched with a piece of string.

Gat guns.

Chinese throwing stars you made in metalwork at school.

Sunderland beating Leeds 1-0 in the 1973 F.A.Cup final. Still the greatest giant killing ever in football in my opinion. Sunderland only won the cup twice in total the other time being 1937 crazy dates. A few of the players ended up playing for Pools including Bobby Kerr.

I was an apprentice working in Leeds at the time, we got a stoppy back in the pub and watched the game, tbh I can’t remember much about it apart from drinking Double Diamond another blast from the past.

I was there that day, my one and only appearance at a Wembley F A Cup Final. I had a ticket for the Leeds end which had a face value of £1. I managed to swap it with a Leeds fan who had a ticket for the Sunderland end. I then changed it for a seat (£3) with a young lad who wanted to be behind the goal.
