It's a shame really. The League Cup used to almost as exciting as the FA Cup and now even that is no great shakes. Dibs is right, we would be watching a mixture of Arsenals reserves and youth team in front of 3000.

The day that a Pools flag was flying at Wembley is long gone.

It became a non event when the top sides started playing their reserve/youth teams, the FA devalued it even further when they excused the top lot from playing early on.
I would happily swap the Burnley win for 3 league points anytime.

That said Ill still have the radio on from kick off tonight.

I too would swap a cup win tonight for three league points but apart for making it a league distraction I would take a good cup run.

It is a massive shame. Some of my earliest Pools memories come from our League Cup run in '74 (I was at Blackburn when we beat them...they were top of Division 3 at the time, got back into H'pool at 2am, went to school the next day half asleep but with Programme to show off!) and the Aston Villa game.

Then there was the Spurs match, Arsenal featuring Ian Wright, Bergkamp etc....Palace when we drew 1-1 then got gubbed 6-1 in the replay...

But it was soooooooooo different then.

We really were shite, and a big cup game was a huge occasion.

Now its not.

well at least we're back to being really shite.

Bollocks to all this swapping the League Cup for league points. For a start you don't get the choice.
I want us to go as far as we can in this competition and I don't care if we have to play Arsenal friggin' ladies on the way. I don't EXPECT us to go a long way, but I'm certainly not going to diss it.

apart from the boro.

The BBC web site has an opinionated sports pundit called Derek "Robbo" Robson - "The Tees Mouth" , who is supposedly a Boro supporter.
Actually Robbo is a completely fictitious character played by talented actor/comedian/improviser Niall Ashdown, who I believe originates from Kirklevington ... but we won't let that get in the way of a good story.

In an interview just after the Borer had won the league cup, Robbo was asked "but isn't it really just a poor relation of the FA Cup".
He answered something like, "What'dyer mean poor relation? Is "Mickey Mouse Cup" the words yer having trouble getting out? Well I'll tell yer what: yes it's the Mickey Mouse Cup, and I'll tell yer something else: it qualifies yer for the European Mickey Mouse Cup!"

And that's one reason Boro suppporters are right to not to sniff at it. Remember, they played in a European final last season (even if it wasn't that particular season they'd qualified through the League Cup).
Only four clubs in the whole of Europe can say that.
