We’re planning to have the bathroom and the en-suite redone. In the bathroom we’re getting rid of the bath and replacing it with a big shower. Also replacing the pedestal and tiling the whole room. In the en suite it’s a new shower cubicle and pedestal along with new tiling.

At the moment I’m planning to rip out the existing fittings and tiling then get a plumber to do the ‘first fix’ for want of a better expression. I’m then getting the tiler to do his thing and the plumber to follow up to finish off.

Questions:

Is the the best way to go about it? I’m not paying a bathroom company to do the above then stick a couple of grand on. I can buy the materials myself just as easy as them.

Any suggestions?

We did the bathroom out four years ago and the daughter knew a self employed plumber who could do the job and we supplied the materials, big savings that way.

if you can find a man who can do both - you will save some cash

you buy all the materials and he does the work...

these people are in such high demand just now though you may have to wait a while.

on the flip side - what you suggest is what i have done with my kitchen... ive managed to project manage the tradesman my self and it came out alot less expensive than a local builder / kitchen(bathroom) fitting company would have charged me

Just make sure the tiler is a proper tiler! Some plumbers say they can tile but in reality they can't, as a bricklayer of many years I've seen some of the hash tiling jobs that plumbers have done, so it's best not to start down this way. Remember, a good plumber won't have the time or inclination to mess on with tiling
