It was an expression I recall from my youth but not heard it used since the 70s.

Remember my dad using that line when we were little, used to baffle my younger brother who’d ask me where it was, I hadn’t a clue but it sounded painful.
My mam sometimes referred to ‘Ducky Merryweather’ ..must have been a West View thing.

Another version from way back when, probably 60’s or 70’s was “up Jacks arse sparrer catching”.
Obviously a reference to the small bird and in response to ‘where’s so and so gone’.

Another favourite often in response to “nana what’s for tea” was ‘arsehole scrapings two for three ha’pence, if you want anymore go to Ada’s back door’.

None of them made it to Pitmatic country from my recollection. Ever heard "You're not piss wise" over your way?

If I asked my old dad where some missing item might be he would often say "Upstairs in the jug" as a more family friendly alternative to "Up Jack's arse in America".

I haven’t got a clue, but they usually referred to some local ‘character’ and in this instance it must have been the fifties. Generally speaking though there was lots of piss staking then but little malice… people could take a joke.
