1-0..dull opening game in front of a sober crowd..red cards for any players hugging kissing after a goal celebration and a yellow card for any hands on hips..

Opening games in World Cups are always dull - especially if England are involved. 70 minutes of frustration turning to anxiety then two late goals for a comfortable 2-0 win.
Unless Pickford gets a dose of the Killips...

If there were games being played in my back garden I wouldn't bother looking, have no interest whatsoever. How do the "supporters" afford to go out there? They all must have "Richard" stamped on their heads.

I agree. I might watch some of the game, hoping for an Iran win.

The World Cup is about to kick off, but still the BBC are bringing up all the rights and wrongs in the pre match conversation with Lineker and co. Yes it should never have been staged there but let’s move on and try and enjoy football let the governments sort out the political issues.

England are hypocrites in my opinion.
Whinge on and on and on about the place and how it treats various groups…and jumps on the plane to go to the party.
Wonder what their next crusade will be when they get back. sctatchinghead

Can see why Ecuadors goal was ruled off after 3 minutes.
Probably the var ref had a gun pointed to his head.

I reckon the English Authorities arses will cave in big style just before kick off and advize Kane not to wear this controversial Arm Band.
Good chance he will be risking arrest.
End of the day laws are there to be abided by.

they could start with equality for straight young white lads at school, but you know that will never happen and all people who prefer to dress in the way their same sex predicessors have for years.

All European football associations have now told players not to wear the armbands.
What a shambles this is becoming.

I agree with that Kev. If Harry Kane is serious he will wear the armband, take the yellow card and then walk off, followed by his team mates. If he doesn't and plays without the band then he and the FA have capitulated.
I am a great believer in abiding by the laws of countries visited but this is a World event and Qatar are loaning their country to accommodate that event and need to be told the event covers ALL cultures and creeds, not just theirs.
All this hoo hah should have been sorted out BEFORE they were appointed as hosts.

Will the England team still ‘take the knee’ I wonder if the USA team do. It’ll be ironic if the don’t they started all this BLM thing.

England could still take the knee, would be a pretty empty gesture considering the large population of Black Muslims on the planet.

If they really want to make a stand, this is their big opportunity. Otherwise from now on leave politics out of football.

Quite a lot of footballers make the christian sign of the cross on the football pitch, will the Qatar culture frown on that too.

The arm bands have been ditched by the European teams who's captains were going to wear them because of the threatened FIFA sanctions if they did wear them.
They'll probably take the knee to demonstrate that black lives matter but withdraw from demonstrating that Gay lives also matter.
Hypocrites.

Why this politicising of the England team is allowed infuriates me.
Politics must be banned from sport, if players want to express their objections don’t go and have the courage of your convictions instead of trying to straddle two horses at the same time.

Had to laugh at the likes of Lineker and Scott pretending they did a lot of soul searching before deciding they were best off going to Qatar to do the world cup instead of in a studio in the UK.
Nothing to do with an expenses paid trip of course.
Then there Gary Neville, accepting Qatari money whilst working alongside two men sacked for sexism and another who shagged his team mates wife.
Hypocrites the lot of them.

Surely with today’s technology there is no need for anyone from the BBC or ITV to be in Qatar ?

6-2. Great start for England and all England fans.

Full marks to the Iranian team for refusing to sing their national anthem. They obviously hadn't got the memo about keeping politics out of sport either.

The second was a sympathy penalty given by VAR right at the death.

I don’t think there are such a thing as sympathy penalties, it’s theWorld Cup, if it come to goal difference I don’t think Southgate would be happy. England shouldn’t be conceding 2 goals against the weakest team in their table.

Couldn’t help but laugh when Wales got their penalty, their fans went into meltdown but the commentary team went into hyperdrive…from the last half hour I saw… I think it was Clive Tildsley who came out with the classic over the top comment that Bale can score just when he wants (after scoring a penalty)…if that’s the case why didn’t he score five goals, ten goals or fifty goals…if he can ‘score when he wants’
It was the usual Bale love fest.

a player who gets little game time now for his club whose career is obviously in decline scores a sodding penalty and will be player of the tournament now if the taffs qualify. then the other super dooper star scores for england, jack grealish. what a day for the hype merchants.

They were played off the pitch first half by the Yanks, who seemed to run out of gas. Pulisic is a class act for them.

Bale is stealing a huge wage in LA now after doing it for years with Real Madrid. He's never fit for club football - then lasts 90 minutes for the Taffs no problem.
