We talked about the old times at pools and i mentioned barker in a negative way but bob said the fans were misled by a personal vendetta against barker by a counsellor and the his mate the hartlepool mail editor. He reckons barker almost bankrupt his family farm businesses cas be spent all the avalible cash on his pools dream. The family had a massive fall out over the way he squanded it all on pools but eventually got out the mess due to land sales n land owed. He laughed when he told me the bloke was loved by all at pools but the fans fed shit.

That doesn’t explain his talks with Scarborough FC about selling out to them.

To be honest Snowy this is the first time i have heard of this Scarborough stuff and that would deffo of been a huge concern at the time. Like i said i used to hate the bloke but Newton did make me rethink after that chance meeting.

Sorry folks, looks like you have missed out on young Banks. He is going to Bradford City on season loan

Once Bradford threw their hat into the ring, the conclusion was not in any doubt. As young player, would you turn down the chance to work with one of the legends of the game in Sparky Hughes? Also, although I hate to admit it, Bradford are a big club having been in the top flight in living memory and regularly get big crowds albeit due to some rather generous admission pricing. I wish the lad well, except when Bradford play us.

I don't obviously know how far discussions were advanced on his loan to us but I hope we haven't been gazumped, simply because a so called bigger club than us came a knocking.
If any club should know how it feels to be the victim of the big club/little club syndrome then Palace should know. They live in the shadow of that constantly.
I thank them for being interested in us and wish the young lad a very successful career.
I have a sour taste forming but I'll get over it I'm sure.

At the open day our CEO Mr. Hobin told supporters we were about to make a couple of marquee striker Signings since then nothing, the chairman then said in his program notes we would HOPEFULLY make more signings again as yet nothing. Do they not understand we desperately need a proven goal scorer or we will struggle. Please do not waste our chances of doing something this season.

He also had discussions with the Scarborough Chairman about the sale of the club I understand as well.

the CEO,s are always going to say stuff like that though. same as a chairman who is hopeful of more signings. only ever believe anything till it actually happens as words are about the only thing not going up in price.

It's a bit like talk of redevelopment, that's all it is talk. Not sure what we would class as a marquee signing now. Someone that's scored a few goals in the football league would probobly be a start.

Forgive my ignorance here, but I thought we were looking for "creative players", you know the sort who can pick a defence splitting pass or a perfectly aimed cross to enable Umerah et al to score the goals. It is no good having loads of forwards but no one to provide the ammunition. Happy to be corrected by those who have a deeper knowledge than I have, I'm just a fan.

So when all fit and healthy we have five forwards and at the most, three would play at any one time and quite often only two. If we sign another forward that means we have six all vying for three, sometimes two positions. My point is if we have to prioritize we need creative attack minded midfielders of which we have few. I agree with Eiphos about possible signings though I doubt we could afford Burey's wages these days.

The only “marquee signing” we will be getting is the one Billy Smarts used to pitch up on the rec. back in the day!

This particular Cicero, it’s fate was sealed in the 1960s in a scrapyard somewhere in the UK, when BR decided diesel was the future!

On the subject of steam loco’s, the story of the disappearing loco’s in the 60’s and their supposed storage in Shropshire in case of a nuclear war, as they would be immune to Electro Magnetic Pulse effects of a nuclear explosion unlike their diesel and electric counterparts, fact or myth.

I heard that a few Pacers have been stashed in case the newer ones breakdown.

The reason I mentioned this was back in the early 80’s we were working near a railway line and a lorry turned up with gear in to demolish a concrete railway water tower. Three of us took our viewing point to watch the action as they intended to pull it over (we expected them to feck it up) all we needed was popcorn. Anyway after a while a car pulled up with two official looking blokes in and said to stop working immediately on risk of arrest (gets interesting!)
Anyway a signalman had seen them and reported what was going on, but the plant manager appeared and insisted as it was privately owned on company land it was his to demolish. He was then told if he did he’d be charged and presented with a notice and told never to touch it or damage it. They drove off and it remained untouched.
Put 2+2 together.

Local trains around the North East are a disgrace, everywhere you go has far more inviting trains than the touched up runaway trains we endure.

i have heard the same thing in the late 70,s from a very reliable source. they were supposed to be stored inside a tunnel that was blocked up somewhere in england. he tried to find out about these missing engines but got no where, but managed to get information about some random ones he knew had been scrapped. he wasn,t the type of lad to make stuff up just to get an audience as other stuff he told me was all true.

5 forwards with, so far, less than 10 EFL goals between them. May well come good, but I really think an experienced goalscorer at this level would ease the undoubted pressure they will be feeling whilst they bed in. Raj needs to loosen the purse strings - a lot of clubs are looking for one, and i'm afraid we might just have to pay the going rate in this instance.

It's not even the forwards though, realistically I would say:

Killip - average goalkeeper for L2
Sterry - good
Tumility - ???
Murray - ???
Lacey - ???
Mayonaise - ???
Ferguson - good
Paterson - ???
Featherstone - Good but aging
Crawford - average
Shelton - poor
Cooke - ???
Sena - ???
Sylla - ???
Hastie - ???
Grey - average
Taylor - ???
Umerah - ???
Hamilton - ???
Ndjoli - ???

Majority of our squad I think have massive question marks over them at L2 level, yes hopefully they come good, but judging on their previous records there is only Cooke with an established record who you can really be confident in. I think this summer has been a massive massive gamble and I hope for Pools sake it pays off, otherwise it will be NL and a few more years of pain to clear it all out.

Rumours of Scott Allan joining, centre midfielder. Heard in the ground last night then Eddie Kyle mentioned it on the radio. Could be a good signing

yeh seems the Scott Allen one is a done deal - hes head and shoulders above this level. Lets hope he can slot in somewhere and change our season.

exactly the type of player we need - little bit of extra quality goes along way. Umerah and Mcdonald will grab goals with this type of player in the team.

Also has a heart condition, Thats why he,s not currantly playing in the Scots Prem which he could easily do.

Good luck to the lad, Think he would really open things up at pools.

Also a type 1 diabetic but that seems not a problem even with sportsmen at the top. could be a good addition if he really wants to play and money is not the deciding factor.

Seems he'll need to be looked after by the medics and may not be able to play every game as his heart issue causes fatigue. He is a quality player when at his best. Just hoping his illness will not be a barrier. As always fingers crossed and wishing the very best for the lad.

Also has a heart condition, Thats why he,s not currantly playing in the Scots Prem which he could easily do.

Good luck to the lad, Think he would really open things up at pools.

Only diagnosed a year ago, the condition causes fatigue and breathing problems, I hope he is ok but not the ideal condition to be playing full time football ?

like a lot of problems that people have it depends more on their determination to do something. we have heard many reports over the years of people doing things they either should not be able to do or should not be doing anyway but fight adversity to succeed.

I agree with this, if we were able to get him in he would make a considerable difference, a creative player with an eye for a pass. Surprised he didn't find another Premiership team in the SPFL.

Worth a punt with a conditional contract that covers any health scenarios.

Good point, there was something in the back of my mind and you’ve cracked it (not my skull).
Now, he didn’t do too badly did he……?

Too right Mr Snow.

Can't remember if it was Coleman who inadvertently called him 'whole hearted' or if was someone else - but can you imagine what would happen to a commentator who made such a slip of the tongue in these days?

I would have an Asa in my team. As an example to the rest of them if nothing else. And he was Scots...................oh dear
