What does one do, we have a C.E., Media Manager and Pools are now looking for a Commercial Manager, surely the salary would be better spend on a player ?

Likewise the recruitment specialist, as Hartley seems to be doing most of this himself.

Also did'nt we just employ an analyst the other week (like to see his report from Saturday)

Does a club like Pools on a good day 5000 fans need so many non playing staff,
Ticketing Manager, Media Manager, Retail Manager, Head Of Operations Chief Operating Officer and other department heads. ?
All of these positions must eat into our playing budget ?

I think we should divide these appointments in to two groups, one group will be revenue earning and as long as their income generation exceeds their costs, carry on.
I have my doubts however about some of these inflated jibber jabber positions, for example, your ‘analysts’ type portfolio which would have been the manager/coaches area of responsibility at one time and doubtless more capable of assessing things.
The provision of lots of ‘luvverly’ data is a breeding ground for bulk/ padded nonsense to justify such posts and my experience over the past 20 years is the production of unnecessary ‘data’ has expanded to justify it’s own over-hyped excistence.

Agree Mr. Snowy about the revenue earning positions. We need yo boost revenues both on match days and non match days. Spurs have ah offer in their stadium pie and a pint before kick 1 pm -2pm for £5,provding a cheaper alternative to the cooperative hospitality and lets be honest most people would then purchase at least anther full priced drink.
Use of the grounds facilities on non match days hiring out the hospitality boxes out for meetings etc.
Having a bookmakers on site common practice at most grounds now.
I am sure there are plenty of ideas that could be introduced to increase revenues.

about time the league steps in to limit the amount of backroom staff a club can employ. they seem to shove their noses into everything else. hang around the vic too long before a game i,m sure they could make a position up for us . head of loitering possibly.

I think if you appoint the right commercial manager with drive, ideas and experience in a way they’re as good as a man on the pitch, if they bring funding into the club….it’s just getting the right person…..a bit like signing the right player.

I can’t disagree but I can’t see high flying executives lining up for the job, you are not going to get anyone decent for less than £40k a year not unless it’s a basic salary plus commission based on sales.

All teams have commercial managers that’s how you run a club. We have had many over the years the most successful one I believe was Alan Stevenson in the middle eighties. One of ours Eddie Barnett even left us for a similar position at Chelsea.

its a case that the commercial side of clubs is so important for the clubs revenue. its just that the average fan is not interested really in it. its just bums on seats for most of us if you have not worked in that background yourself.

I beg to differ Sir.
I learnt that phrase off the famous Mr T and his chums on the A team and have used it since 2006 on this very board.
I will be calling Mr T as a witness to appear at the highest court in the land and supported by ‘Howling Mad Murdoch’, ‘ Hannibal Smith’ and ‘Face’.
I will see you in Court Sir, you are a cad and a boundaaaaaaaah!

Hang about, at this point shouldn’t you be chaining some scantily clad young beauty to a railway track as part of a fiendish plot in true Victorian villain mode….just asking like.
