It’s become very common for people not to wear ties nowadays when wearing jackets/suites? In a photo of Biden and Johnson at the G7 summit neither are wearing ties which is unusual for politicians albeit Johnson looks scruffy what ever he wears.
In my day you couldn't get in a night club with out a collar, they tie and a jacket, I still think it’s scruffy not to wear a collar and tie when wearing a jacket more some of the shirts worn look like they have never seen an iron.

you sound as if you are from my generation where even lads did their very best going out if they wanted to find a lass. no tie, scruffy shirt, dirty shoes{not trainers} you might have well stayed at home. nowadays you cannot tell if someone is going out for a night out or have just brought the dog home after a long walk. mind you a lot of lasses are as bad as someone should tell em fat arses anddo not mix. as for politicians being tieless its our old mate blair who seemed to have started this casual trend. casual used to mean a sports jacket and trousers but still with a tie unless it was that hot day in summer.

Yeah, remember the Clansman for that in the 70’s, no jeans, tie compulsory and still they queued on a weekend. Food wasn’t bad in the restaurant either.

My view a tie is a symbol of male oppression.

When I started work (1964) my first job was at Barclays Bank and a tie was mandatory and when I left and got into Sales (on the road) I continued wearing one.

It's only in the last 15 years or so that I haven't worn one other than a few funerals I've attended but I will not wear black, normally a quite bright tie as I want to celebrate that person's life not their death.

I suppose though it is "an old person's thing" combined with habit.

I wore a tie for work until age 62, when I started commuting 14 miles to the office by bike. We had excellent changing facilities, but wearing a tie even after getting a shower was never going to happen.

A tie is the most pointless piece of clothing ever. What is the actual point of one?
