Anyone know a decent butcher/ baker who makes a decent mince or steak pie
I eliminate all supermarket/shop products because despite the price they’re crap and certain shops charge a lot for tarted up mince pie, the steak pies all appear to contain pencil rubbers in ‘gravy’.
It’s hard work I am willing to selflessly undertake the arduous/ tedious research to find an enjoyable pie.

when i come up i always get mine from the butchers on northgate up the headland thats between the cafe and the charity shop. decent pies without being a rip off. shows they are popular because they sell out quick which is a good indication we are not on our own.

Had good reports on that, Ayres, one of my lads pops in first thing before the lads off the docks descend.

SlackArris ! Good to hear from you.

You're the perfect poster for when Snowy comes steamin' in with his questions.

"What are your sources?" "My other half - he's an aficionado." (He's been called worse, mostly by the "Quiet Gentleman" in
(sauces would be appropriate in this case) his darkest moments at half time.)

"Where's the evidence?" " It's evident, all down his front."

When the crowd chants, "Who ate all the pies?) watch out for the supporter who smiles quietly, sticks his chest out and thinks, "That could be me."
The rest of you can just talk among yourselves for a few minutes. Hope you are enjoying the respite, SlackArris. Looking forward to seeing you next season.
Back to the pies!

The pies will achieve the same scrutiny as idle pools gossip from the ‘informed’ plus pies have the advantage of actually existing.
At least pies have credibility

Had a steak one from Blyths Fens estate shops yesterday and it was very good but for a 5 inch pie it cost £1.95.
Minimum flatulence recorded.

If you are ever in the Ripon area or are passing - then head into Ripon Market Sq. The Butchers there does the best Pork and Apple pies.

Can i please respectfully remind all that Snowys request on this thread was regarding mince or steak pies and some discussions are referencing pork pies etc.
Perhaps another thread is called for as regard other pies/pastry items.
I have heard much criticism of threads on here going off on a tangent.

Several years ago the likes of Greggs etc changed the names of their "Cornish pasties" to "traditional" or "meat and vegetable" pasties.
However i am confused as the pasties sold were top crimped not side crimped making them Devon pasties and with the introduction of the EU protected status rules on Cornish pasties they could have just renamed them "Devon pasties" to dodge the rules.

Whatever the names of the products i avoid Greggs like the plague and would much prefer to pay a little extra and get a proper pasty from a local butchers which is filled with meat not sludge.

Sat in the car park at the fens shops when a woman walked out of Victoria’s bakers ( decent buns) with a couple of freshly made baguettes and assorted pastry’s went straight into Gregg’s with them in her arms just for two coffee’s . Class.

years ago before they bought others out and expanded they were quite good. my ex misses gave me a list of what to bring back when i drove up to edinburgh. got to say they were unrecognisable to the bland stuff they sell now. bit like all local companies that go national like hollands pies. once only found in the north west and were good. now they are a pale reminder of their heyday.

I find Thomas The Bakers a cut above the other chain with good pasties, pies cakes and especially the sandwiches.

I think Balmers bakery used to be open in Murray street and it used to supply to other outlets in the town.
I remember the mince ones were a bit gristley where my teeth would bounce of the odd bit.
Not sure now though.

How dare you Sir, that warrants a duel….. balmers mince pies were great only beaten by their buns.
Kemps mince pies were gorgeous, in fact everything they did was lush, lovely couple too and Piggins butchers, now a pizza shop.

Gristle is cartilage and is an essential part of your diet.
The bouncing of your teeth off it greatly strengthens your jaw.
A medic told me this. :liar:

It’s only been closed 40 years, so it may be a waste of £40….
Apparently that’s the queue of ‘Balmer’s Volunteers’ signing up to hunt you down

To be fair that shot was taken in the 70’s during the National bakers strike. You’d sell your kids for a bag of self raising and the entire family if they threw some yeast in.
Happy days

My favourite pub grub is Steak and Ale pie.
The Castle Inn at Lydford in Devon is renowned for it's S and A pie.
Between the meat and the crust they put a layer of blue cheese which is delicious. You can have it without the cheese if you're not keen on it.
If any of you are ever in that vicinity it is well worth a try. Lovely olde worlde pub with an excellent restaurant and varied menu. They do bed and breakfast as well. Not far from Tavistock where Frankie Drake was born. His house is near there and you can visit as it's National Trust.
We've booked a table at the pub a fortnight tonight, so if anybody is in the area come in and I'll let you buy me a pint.

That's what I remember, you had to tear them apart from the block they came in. I've never had anything similar since and certainly none that you'd rip one out of the bag and eat it on the way home. The free one.

They sure do. It's the only pub in the village.
