£310,000 according to the Express (not the best source I know).

All while kids starve and the NHS is ran dry. Nice one!!!

Surely, surely everyone of every politician incarnation in this country will agree with me here? Why spend that much money just to get figuratively urinated on on television? While we have shortages of nurses and police?

And yet we still agree to pay our politicians far more than that in dodgy expenses, pay rises, travel expenses, spouses salaries, etc. Without a whinge.

I say Eurovision every time.

You have a point there, the saved money would only get spent on luxury flats, eye tests in Barnard castle, eyelashes for Priti Patel and nukes we'd never use.

Other than the LGBTQ+ community, who else gives a fuck? It's a fancy dress ball with awful music.

Still, 300 grand for 3 hours of peak time television is cheap as chips. No wonder the Beeb loves it.

Wonder how much they paid that bloody awful Amanda Holden?

Thought the Icelandic guy nailed it - mind wasn't their act worryingly bizarre?

that amount is just a drop in the ocean in the bigger picture of the country. even giving the money away to the residents of hartlepool its not much more than 3 quid a person and would hardly be a help to the police or the NHS. have not watched it since the days of terry wogan and its as much a song competition as question of sport is a quiz show.

Check out their official video, it’s surprisingly good and funny.

Because they finished 4th I took the Bookies to the cleaners. £6.50.

Watched it on mute whilst on a Skype call to a mate. It was hilarious after a few beers.

First time I've watched this in years, as her indoors is a fan, I reckon the German entry was a pisstake as they don't usually fair well either, we should do the same and enter appalling songs ie 2 people banging on biscuit tins with sticks (or my lovely horse esq) to give it some credence and warrant the nil points.

Eurovision is worth watching just for the voting. As per n earlier comment it proves Germany does have a sense of humour, the song/performance was fun and probably a pisstake. As a Eurovision lover, who is not LBGTQ+ I still love it, I laughed at the voting (the political side {Greece and Cyprus give 12 points to each other} plus the (new) former Eastern Block countries who vote for their neighbours) etc. Enjoy the spectacle of a few hours of meaningless fun. PS Ireland no longer throw it (alledgedly), as they don't get past the Semi finals.

I thinked about this and look back, we blame the Brexit etc, however out of the BIG 5 Germany has only won once and as for the rest I think only France has won it more than us. Spain, and Italy hadn't won it for yonks either.

Also remember the socio Historical music scene of some countries , hence "rock" or "techno/dance" songs get more votes from them, hence Italy came from knowhere to win.

IMHO we had the worst performance of the night and France should have won.

Surely you're of an age to remember Buck's Fizz in Eurovision 1981?

https://www.google.com/search?q=making+ ... e&ie=UTF-8

I reckon the lasses whipping their skirts off won it for the UK.

agree. however if some fit young lasses did the same nowadays they,d get slated by some feminist groups for their actions for bringing women down into the gutter. back then everyone enjoyed it and not in a pervy way either.

Eurovision is basically the EU Parliament set to music, tedious, a bit twee, goes on a bit and makes incomprehensible decisions.
It’s a spoof that no on dare stop, it’s ‘music’ for people who don’t listen to music.

There's another issue with how much we pay for Eurovision, it essentially seeds us and allows us to go through the qualification process other nations go through. Thus its hard to gage just what the reaction towards the song will be in comparison to other nations.

Although I don't think that really matters anyone. The future of the series lies in countries like Ukraine, Serbia, Lithuania and other nations that'll just vote for their region. With occasional ex winners like us and Sweden coming close.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but it's a bit sad and reflective of the world when a song contest becomes embroiled in politics the way the Eurovision has.

I suppose originally it was a bit of fluffy telly for those who like that sort of thing. However when it started it was smaller in numbers and all Western European countries. With the expansion of it the ‘womble’ countries all got together and voted en masse for the best ‘goat herding folk song’…….
Like the EU, it was a good idea that expanded and got out of hand.

Ukraine's song won for the same reason Russia was excluded - the death and destruction Putin has inflicted on a neighbouring country. Same reason Pools had a Ukrainian flag up for the last few home games.

I know why Ukraine won, it was bleeding obvious why they won.
Believe it or not I was actually aware of the situation, who couldn’t be.

I was referring to how it started to change after the break up of the Warsaw Pact countries in the early nineties, nothing whatsoever to do with todays situation.

Great news  Eurovision 2023 is being moved to the UK from Ukraine due to the war there.
14 cities and down have put their name in the hat. Newcastle and Leeds being the nearest with Swindon also interested.
Cant see it going anywhere but London though with Birmingham in with an outside chance.

I watched a programme called Falklands: Island of Secrets on ITV Hub last night.

Thought it did not show the Falklands in a very good light. I had the opportunity to go there a few years back and I'm glad I did not.

Historic bridge...Close to a nature reserve and a source of green energy...and only a stone's throw from the metropolis of Middlesbrough and its fantastic shopping and amenities...stone throwing being a popular pastime in The Clarences.

It really should come to somewhere "different".
You can bull anywhere up and would anyone care except the towns/citys who expect this type of thing by right.
The Australians could be housed in Whitby and the Israelis in Seaton Carew.
