The announcer over the tannoy saying things like.

"Would the owner of a blue Austin Mini PEF 687 please return to the car as you have left your lights on"

The half time shuffle, from the Town End to Rink End ..if the tide was favorable. IE we won the toss before kick off.

That's when we used to kick into the RinkEnd Second half.

If a big crowd (by big anything over 2500, yes really)was there, pick an end and stay there.
UB 40 to get in cheaper anyone. Marvelous.

Remember the bloke who used to walk around the pitch at half time with a pole with a blackboard on top with the winning draw numbers chalked on, and got all sorts flung at him...especially pork pies.
When Gibson jammed nearly everyone in the Mill House stand after taking away the Rink End, giving half the Town End away to away supporters and demolishing the Clarence Road side......

For sure. Keith Nobbs would be the man to ask if it's ever coming back, but seems unlikely while no-one can predict what's happening with the virus.

Our first promotion season in 1968. The ten minutes of halftime were a slow walk round to the other end to see Pools attack again, accompanied by the sound of that recent hit 'Hey Jude' (seven minutes plus) followed by some birthday and score announcements before the teams came out again.

Binns (for all your record needs) only had to give us one single that year

I also seem to recall lads in white coats walking along the side of the pitch with trays of confectionary, Mars bars etc. to sell to excited kids like me at the Mill House terrace wall. Or was that just a fevered dream after another Terry Bell goal?

Remember the song...” he’s here, he’s there, he’s every fucking where, Terry Bell, Terry Bell (rinse and repeat) to the tune of the ‘Quartermaster’s Store’.
Readings gain, our loss, didn’t we get £10,000 for him?

Local lads like Ken Johnson and Wattie Moore making a career of pro football with Pools.

And yes, I remember the smoke and on one occasion an opponent appeared out of a cloud to score a match winning goal at the town end.

Kenny Johnson has a commemorative bench under the beacon on Seaton front, I sit there when I take Ratboy out for his walk and ask a few favours team wise as he’s closer to head office so to speak....I’ll be sectioned under the Mental Health Act shortly, but he never says no.
Don’t forget going past the ground upstairs on the blue bus if a match was on when you were a kid, that’s what got me wanting to go to Pools.

One of the funniest things I ever heard at the Vic was when the programme was a folded sheet of A4 paper costing 1d to buy.

It was a very windy day and one of the players was having a stinker and a programme blew onto the pitch and landed near the player.
A voice from the crowd shouted "hoi, so and so. pick up that programme and see if you're playing"
Hilarious. What was known as terrace wit.

No it wasn't a fevered dream, the white coat might have been though, but I was one of those lads with the tray.
We used to make quite a few bob each game, but that's another story.

The smell of proper tabs like Woodbine or Capstan Full Strength mixed with stale beer. .
Don't supposed many of those blokes are around any more.

Great stuff - thanks OYD! That was when Mars Bars seemed to be the size of house bricks and cost about 3d.

Next can we talk about the blackboards with letters on them marked with letters of the alphabet, where half-time scores would be chalked? You needed a programme to see which letter represented each game.

In the 60's when after training the players went to the local pub

On match days they travelled to the ground on the bus with supporters

There were no substitutes where as today some matches seem to allow up to 9

wasn,t just in the 60,s things like that happened. late 80,s and early 90,s it was similar. steve bull a wolves legend went to training on the bus, and i remember a northampton centre half back at their old ground rolling up with his boots in a plastic morrisons type bag. players that had cars were usually of the banger types and not like some high end car showroom you get now. anybody remember that ref from newcastle who had a roller with a REF reg.

Jeff Astle singing with Skinner and Badiel on their footy programme every week after they discovered him working as a window cleaner....probably West Brom’s greatest forward.

There’s the relatively recent argument, defended by the gullibles, that the professional footballers career was over in their mid 30’s which is why it was ok to pay out decent money to them. That view has almost went through the floor as even teenager players are paid obscene amounts at the top level that put them way above sympathy.
My old fella made the point that when he came ashore he just looked for another job, like everyone else does, why are footballers different....?

its obvious a football career is short but they know it when they start. many of us have had to change jobs when they thought they had a job for life if they wanted it. the work just disappeared and had to start something new. very revelant in most areas of the midlands and the north.

“My best manager was Len Ashurst when I was at Hartlepool,” said Warnock. “That was a difficult place to be, but I learned more from Len Ashurst than I learned from any other manager.
“I used to play for some managers where I used to dread getting out of bed. I used to think, ‘Oh my God, what have we got today?’ But that certainly wasn’t the case with Len.
“He had the fewest things to work with did Len, but I learned more about man management from him than from anybody else. And Hartlepool was a great two years for me because I was happy. I ended up getting the Player of the Year and that was the only thing I ever won as a player. That was because I was happy and I used to love going into training because I knew I was learning all the time from him. Some managers, I thought we were a waste of time. All they wanted to do was show off and nutmeg people in training. I used to think, ‘Why do you nutmeg somebody, lose the ball, and you’re happy?’ Surely you’re better off putting the ball alongside somebody and keeping it?

Fair play to him, he does have an excellent record of getting Clubs promoted, and many into the Premiership.

I suppose he is a bit like Marmite - you either like him or not.

At 73 he's deserved a break but hasn't he done this before then come back after a few months away?

Steetley's horrible smoke giving West View a break and coming across the vic. That first night under the lights against Southend on a snow pitch with an orange ball. Being behind the town end goal and hoping it didn't collapse when showered with rust when the ball hit it. Does anyone remember on the millhouse side when two defenders hooked Halliday by an arm each after he beat them? Keith coming back to Pools after his transfer previously had saved them. Being behind the goal when there was a Pools corner and Big Bob Newton edging their keeper. Wandering where Darlo fans were at The Vic? So many happy memories. Thank you all real Poolies for helping me keep my sanity after lots of early life trauma.
