This must be terrifying for Starmer. No matter what the Tories do the voters don't turn to him.
Having said that, the Tories have a long record of taking the piss out of the Lib Dems in bye elections.
Then at the next General Election they take it back off them. Nobody in their right mind will expect the Lib Dems to hold on to that seat, apart from the dreamers in the Lib Dem party.
Further proof of no electable alternative to Johnson. The only opposition to Bojo is his own party colleagues.
The Tories running Government whilst also forming the opposition. You couldn't make it up.

I dont know about it being terrifying for Starmer. They have had a Tory MP for 200 years down there so they are never going to vote Labour. They'd probably rather not have an MP at all than a Labour one. A richly deserved kicking for the Tories but as you say normal service will be resumed at the next GE.

Yes Starmer has a lot to do with his party down over 12% against the 2019 election.

The turnout in 2019 was 67.9% whereas yesterday it was a paltry 46.3%

I expect the other 53.7% will be moaning about this that & the other when in my opinion, if you don't vote you can't grumble.

As soon as the MSM slavering dirt diggers appear on TV it goes off. Whoever was in charge of the country from Jesus to the Devil would be would be hounded into the ground by them. Never watch the MSM news anymore either.
