I just cant really find it within myself to have any interest whatsoever in what goes on at Middlesbrough. No offence to those with a different opinion.

Warnock was a former Pools player and I recall him scoring a goal direct from a corner.

Yes I remember him well. When he first came to Pools he rented a flat at the end of our road. I remember him being confused by the word "howay". He thought it meant "away" so "howay in" was too much. I always liked him as a player for us.

When I was a kid I used to ride my bike to Middlesbrough to watch Cloughie when Pools were away or not playing. There was a kid in Ayresome Street who used to look after bikes in his back yard for threepence. A proper little entrepreneur. He also offered to clean the bikes for extra but I never took him up on that. I stopped going when Clough was transferred to Sunderland. I saw Denis Law play for the first time there when he played for Huddersfield. I was amazed at this skinny little kid who tore Boro to shreds. I became an instant fan of Denis and years later I spent two hours in his company and that is something I will never ever forget. Great man and extraordinary footballer.

Makes my little anecdote pale into insignificance.

Don’t worry, it could be the cold weather, they’ll soon return to normal if you sit by the fire.

just wonder if in todays game that dennis law would have made it or not. would he have joined the list of players who were regarded as too small and frail before they got even a chance at youth level.

Today’s players in the Premiership are much of a muchness. There are the stand out players, but few ‘characters’ in the game.
I suspect a talent like Denis Law would work his way up from the the lower leagues nowadays, as the top flight academy system in place today would have filtered him out the gate. But a talent like his would eventually shine though, the bloke’s talents were unstoppable.
Cloughy was interviewed about academy’s once and dismissed them because he said kids who from an early age had been tied to an academy system were burnt out by their mid teens.

it would have been so much harder for Law to have shone in the modern game with the attitude of stopping players and teams becoming the major reason for playing. he would have to play in a set game plan that could stifle his talents. you can hear it now where some pundit moans about his defensive ability in the side. Cloughy is spot on about his views on acadamies and previous youth teams. will never forget that notts county one of the mid 90,s with every single player my 6ft1inch height or more. when talking to one of their coaches affter the game on how they find these lads he just grinned saying that they,ll keep em in his job for a couple of years. to my knowledge none ever made it.

The funny part of Cloughy’s comments was that he added that they also discovered girls and you can’t compete with that.
