Monkey Business no 204 is now out and available to read at https://www.monkeybizz.net with more than the odd mention of Dave Challinor, although Newcastle's ownership and managership get a look in, as well as the usual cartoons, spoof ads, press clippings etc. in this fairly full edition.

superb enjoyable read as always... thank you..agree with views of many of your contributors...particularly "billys contract" in this edition with respect to big dave.....worth highlighting here especially since i suspect some in the dressing room are more gutted than others by the gaffers departure

"Win, lose or draw, Dave Challinor's enlightening post-match interviews are well worth a listen.
To a layman like myself, when he begins talking about tactics, systems, shapes and formations he is up there with the likes of Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein elaborating on black holes and theories of relativity, fascinating stuff, but I haven't a clue what he is on about. To that end I think we should bestow the title of 'Professor' on Dave Challinor.

One aspect of his interviews that I very much enjoy, but also at the same time I'm a little uncomfortable with, is when he singles out individual players for criticism.

After the Harrogate match, when asked about Daly's wonder goal he countered it in the same sentence by saying that the same player was responsible for Pools conceding their first goal which indeed was the case. A few weeks earlier he was asked about Jamie Sterry's Man-of-the-Match performance and pointed out that in the first half he wasn't up to his normal standard.

On another occasion he pointed out that Mark Shelton is a great worker but needs to have an eye for goal. Basically the manager was only repeating what our little group on the Town End terrace had also noted. Let's be honest we all know which players have put in a shift during a match and others who need to step up to the mark.
"Sometimes I wonder what sort of effect his public admonishments have on the dressing room as a whole"
I can imagine that if it had been Dave Challinor and not Alf Ramsey who was the England manager at the time of the 1966 World Cup final win, when being asked what he thought of Geoff Hurst's hat-trick, I am sure he would have said something along the lines of "For his second goal that hit the bar and went in he should have lobbed the keeper and, as for the last goal, he should have played it out wide to Alan Ball. He will be on the bench next game if he doesn't buck his ideas up."

It is refreshing that the manager is forthcoming and honest in his views and in truth he is only reflecting what the fans are already aware of, as it is there on the pitch for all to see. He was much the same at Fylde and was scathing in the press about one particular player's performance in a defeat against a ten-man Dover side.

Sometimes I wonder what sort of effect his public admonishments have on the dressing room as a whole, let alone the individual players who have been put under the spotlight.

It is well-known that a good old-fashioned severe rollicking can motivate some players but can have the opposite effect on others who, by having it put in the public domain, might sink further into their shells. In truth, I don't think that is very professional.

Basically Challinor tells it how it is and in some cases ...how it isn't! As the old adage goes "What goes on in the dressing room stays in the dressing room." Perhaps that is why it was rumoured that he lost the dressing room at Fylde."

Great post, poolie 1. I noticed him having a go at Byrne talking about how he needs to use his gray matter after the Harrogate game because he touched Molyneux's strike into the net from an offside position when the ball was going in anyway and would have been a goal if Byrne had left it. I also recall Lidds in a post match interview some time back saying something like like "the gaffer likes to have a go at players", it was a passing remark during a positive interview after a Pools win but I thought he showed just a hint of annoyance. When Fella got injured, Challinor said something like "he'll be alright" and chuckled saying "I dunno where he got those crutches from probably A and E." I think you are right, poolie, some players may well dislike the public hanging out to dry so may not be too upset at Dave's hasty departure.

Oz.....it might work as a man management strategy for a time.....slagging off your players in public.... and humiliating them in front of their team mates in the dressing room....not as if they can shout back at you or go to the press and slag you off is it ?....its just classic bullying really...but the effect wears off .....and you run the risk of someone eventually standing up to you when they've had enough.....then look at what can happen...

Apparently at DC's recent meet and greet with the Stockport fans fans he made a statement along the lines of....players will be told how he wants them to play to his system and anyone who doesn't buy into it will suffer the consequences. That is my crude summary but it is the gist of it. There are some seasoned Pro's at Edgeley Park who cost the club a lot of money and will not be paid peanuts. It will be interesting to see if DC carries out his threat by benching or dropping a few of them and the subsequent reaction from above and even the fans. We'll have to watch that one.

Good post Mr Poolie 1, enjoyed reading that.

There’s always been an element of this in football and if handled correctly and infrequently can have positive reactions to team building.
But to constantly slag players off leads to natural resentment and as a consequence a loss of form and a lowering of performance. Sarcasm and humiliation make no one perform better in any walk of life.
In effect, it’s a form of bullying which is seen as funny to everyone except the victim.
This is no way to build up a team spirit, isolating and mocking them.
It has a limited shelf life and then inevitably everything falls apart.
