You gotta laugh. Here we are playing hell because our manager has been "poached", yet 4 out of 5 "targets" are already in full time employment elsewhere ! OK, I appreciate we would make " formal" approaches through the proper channels, but it still smacks of double standards. Football fans - we're a breed apart aren't we ? ( and I include myself in that ).

I agree. I enjoyed reading that. A lot of food for thought in that article.

The thing about Clough being a young inexperienced manager is that he had Peter Taylor alongside him who had knowledge of the lower leagues and helped bring in players like Parry,Sheridan etc.

So very true.....Can you imagine going on a round the world cruise to wake up at your first port of call to find the Captain and his officers have buggered off to Swanko Del Posh Cruises to take charge of their new liner ‘Golden Balls’ for a wedge more money.
Oh no they can’t, the system won’t allow it.
Football has one crazy system of governance, if indeed it has one at all.

Well the rules are actually quite robust but unfortunately we are dealing with the vagaries of human nature linked to a venture which is a cross between a hard nosed business and entertainment but with a strong dose of emotion. Hartlepool United would have been within their rights to refuse to release Challinor from his contract. This would have meant he could not work for Stockport but he would of course be very unhappy and certainly not disposed to continue his job at Pools. A massive expensive legal wrangle would then ensue which would drag on for quite some time with both clubs effectively being managerless and eventually Challlinor would get what he wanted. The only realistic way out of all of this is to release him from his contract in return for a sum of money which is of course what we and every other club does in this situation. At the end of the day you cannot make someone work for you when they have expressed the desire to leave however dishonourable one might consider their conduct to be.

I’m not disagreeing with you, but can’t ever see a way of resolving the conundrum that leads to these situations...only good thing is that after they’ve been gone a week you don’t give a toss about them anymore.

have always questioned this need for contracts anyway. all it seems to do is put money into pockets of fail managers who are financial secure for life by cocking things up. know the money at pools level is not like that but the principle still applies.

Just need a Chairman who says no like Levy did when Man City came calling for Kane. It can be done. Very much the exception.

Andy Woodman for me, like. Apart from his football management ability, he speaks the same language as Mark Cullen so will be able to explain what is required much more easily than Dave C who could only speak scouse.

I stand corrected. I think I confused him with the Woking manager who is a proper Geordie what with Woodman having connections with the mags etc. My mistake and apologies for any inconvenience I may have caused. It may well be that the trauma of the last seven days has taken its toll on me. Either that or I am just losing it plain and simple. Anyway, even if he is a cockney geezer, I still think Woodman would be a good manager for us.

Not sure this is true or not but I was told yesterday that Woody's son is a young goalie at Newcastle.

With Pools recruiting for a Head of Recruitment (with heavy input into the stats side of things), does this shorten the odds of Sweens getting the managers job permanently?

Just a thought.

I believe young Woodman is indeed a young keeper at the Mags and Andy himself was once a goalkeeping coach at Newcastle, hence me getting my wires crossed.

I know some will say no experience in league but I'd prefer up and coming boss to one who been sacked numerous times.

Its only football fans who can be happy poaching another clubs manager after it happening to them. If the subject had been a different one, say politics and boris, people would be taking a far higher moral ground on this. The game will eventually eat itself alive with money.

I’ve given this one a lot of thought and whatever options you come up with to stop these practices there’ll be devious ways around them. It’s a grand system for the moneybags clubs so it will never change sadly.

Don't think it was so much DC leaving that annoyed me it was going down a level despite how much money Stockport have. If he had gone to a Barnsley or Bolton I think a lot of people would have wished him luck. If we did take someone like Wild then he's moving to the EFL and to a bigger club. I refuse to believe Stockport are a bigger club than pools, probably very similar in size. Plus I'd hope pools went about things in the right way without any underhand tactics.

just go back to the old days where the club advertise for a manager, pick a short list and hopefully appoint the right one. nothing could be placed at pools door doing it that way. no one is forced to apply.
