My missus' friend is having a few days away and they've chosen Hartlepool as a base. They're stopping in the marina Premier Inn. They've asked me where the tourist attractions are in Hartlepool.

I did consider pointing them in the direction of the Catcote, the Devon and The Riviera but they've all gone. Maybe have a look at Steetley chimney but naw. They could drive round Bruce Crescent and pick up a cheap settee and a few tyres I suppose and top it all off by touring Titan House. Apparently all of these attractions are no more so what should I tell them?

Don’t laugh, that Premier’s been extended three times and the wife had a load of lasses from across the North of England stopping there and they loved it in the middle of the Marina.
Maybe we as town we knock ourselves too much....and I’ve worked in Luton bbolt

think knocking the town where we live is a national pastime. there are far worse places than hartlepool and some actually think that putting up a new bus shelter is front page news. apart from luton as you mentioned a day out in burnley, rochdale , mansfield , batley, dewsbury are hardly recommended and never forget the back streets of many holiday towns where degradation is the name of the game.

I no longer live in Hartlepool but it still has one of the best beaches in the country, and I am coming over for the first league game against Crawley and stopping in Seaton Carew for a couple of days. UTP

I'd feel safe walking around Owton Manor at night than I would London in broad daylight.

During the lockdown I did a lot of walking in Hartlepool and the surrounding areas, and it made me realise that Hartlepool is an attractive, varied, town with a lot of potential for day trips and weekend breaks. With some imaginative investment it could become even better. For example the Marina is very popular but to me it looks as though it is not quite finished with a number of untidy areas that let it down. The question is whose responsibility is it.

actually the beach at seaton must be well over a mile long. far better than places like southport where you need a day to get to and from the sea and others like morecambe and blackpool where there is no beach at high tide. while there is still room for improvements there its still a good day out for the majority of people.

I reckon an outdoor pool in that unused central area of the marina would go down well, especially with young families. Or a ten pin bowling rink.

The headland is a real attraction with St Hildas, gun battery etc which is totally under exploited/ promoted.

When they mention beaches, two years ago, I can’t remember if it was The Times or Telegraph had the North Sands in an article as one Britain’s hidden beaches.

What I really hate is when the media talk about beaches they go direct to bloody Brighton where the locals are shown spreading their towels over the massive rocks and pebbles, not so much a beach, more a quarry.
Why does Brighton always look like a town that’s helping the police with their enquiries?

the headland area is an unknown gem unless you live or have lived in the area. the whole area is far more interesting than the sodding piece hall at halifax is whats had millions thrown at it and is pushed down peoples throats if they ever google halifax itself. her indoors had her two brothers visit us a few years ago. they had never heard of the headland or seaton carew. one was so impressed he brought his motor home up with his wife for a week to do the area some justice after the day we gave em. apart from the intersting stuff they loved the drink and cafe prices after bournemouth rip offs.

Hartlepool isnt as bad as what its made out to be.
The marina is a nice area, Ward Jackson park is also a nice place for a wander. Even the headland isn't bad once you get there.
I lived on the marina for a couple of years and enjoyed my time there until they built more flats and blocked my view!!

I was walking the dog at the Headland war memorial and sat on the benches, a glorious afternoon, when two workmen, Geordies to a tee, got out of a van near the light house and walked over and started taking photographs. When they walked away one said to the other one....”why haven’t I discovered Hartlepool before?”.
Makes you consider things in a different light.

I think we need a Jeff Stelling rant on Saturday afternoon to promote the town.

I made a delivery every Thursday for upwards of 15 years to Brighton (well Hove actually) and the main thing the locals moaned about was the Council being run by the Green Party!
On another point if you go next door to Worthing now that is the definition of "God's waiting room"

The first time I drove along the front at Brighton I thought I’m not stopping here. The wife wanted to stop for a picnic as did the kids but I eventually found an enchanting location adjacent to Shoreham Power Station.

It always gets me in films from the 1930,s onwards is that when people go to the coast in them its always sodding brighton they go to. they actually say they are going there but obviously they film it somewhere else or in the studio as they are sitting on a beach with sand all around them. anyone from abroad watching this will think that brightons sandy beaches are the only ones the country has to offer.

Graham Greene's fault in part. His 30s crime thriller Brighton Rock, was a big hit, so was the film.

It's always been the easiest seaside resort to get to from Sarf London. Eastenders had Southend.

whilst all that is true there is no need to keep saying in different films that they are off to brighton, someone has been found or living there or have left home to go there. actually know of no one who has had a holiday there unlike many other south coast resorts. even her indoors who is a londoner only went a couple of times and other places far more. overpriced and overated are her words for the place.

In some parts, but London is a massive place and I’d feel comfortable walking around 90% of it in daylight or at night time. I’m not saying it’s crime free at all, but I get frustrated with the stereotypical bashing of Hartlepool and London alike. Both Hartlepool and London have good bits and bad bits, and the reality is probably a lot different to the perception that out-of-towners have of each of them. I’ve always found it amazing when people find out I’m a Pools fan how quickly they offer an opinion, usually negative, on Hartlepool as a town. One ex-colleague of mine, an American who had never been to Hartlepool, told me it was a shithole that should be “mothballed”. The irony is that most people I’ve met that have been to Hartlepool actually have very nice things to say about it (which I’ll admit often isn’t the case with London!).

It’s owned and managed by Mandale and NW Parking Management Ltd., you would have thought the money they received from parking would go towards sprucing it up.

problem with london is that the haves and have nots are multiplied a lot more than they are in hartlepool or most other places in the country. people say london is a rip off. well it is if you never get away from the tourist spots. if you want a decent meal down there at a proper price they exist if you look and ask. can say just the same for all seaside resorts and inland tourist spots if they are not too small like bourton on the water. the kinks song waterloo sunset sums the place up for me.

Agree. I've never lived in London but been a regular visitor through work. I'd say you're more likely to have a bad experience taking pot luck on a restaurant or caff you don't know here in the North-East than down there. Choice and competition drives standards - and price too away from the tourist traps.

The cost of a pint is a different story, though there's always Weatherspoons.

There was one nudist on the beach at the time, the kids were crying with laughter, the wife said “look at the state of that duffer”.....what possessed you to do it.

I bumped into a load of Saracens supporters up for the Heineken Cup Final in Newcastle a couple of years ago. They were staying on the marina because everywhere in Newcastle was fully booked and overpriced and they'd had great time here.
I'm sure there are plenty of us who would like to know how they got on.
