Has passed away. A familiar face to us oldies.

Seeing his face at midday on a Saturday in the 70s, introducing Grandstand just before Football Focus, then off to the match around 1.15pm , is etched in the memory.

From an era where football was a sport and the wages weren't much more than the fans.
Plus the FA Cup was taken seriously by almost every club.
RIP Frank.

Agree. Hosted Grandstand from 1968-1983, generally great times for football and great time to be alive. Shame about the sex and drugs scandal later on, big mistake Frank , getting caught. Who doesn't like a party that involves wearing womens underwear, cocaine and prostitutes, we're all human

Thanks for the memories Frank.

Grandstand and the 1st Breakfast show. He was a consumate and likeable presenter. It's a shame he will be remembered more, by some for his rapid fall from Grace, than his distinguished career.

The salary cap was abolished on 18th of January 1961. At that point footballers went from a maximum of £20 a week to whatever they could negotiate. Frank Bough's start at Grandstand was 1968. I think Johnny Haynes of Fulham and England was the first £100 per week footballer in England which was five times what he got previously. At that point footballers left the average wage behind for good. Steelworkers got less than £2 per shift.

As a sixteen year old I got £2-15 shillings a week (£2.75). After deductions I took home £2-9s-7d. I got the 9s-7d and gave me Mam the £2. Kenny Johnson joined Pools in 1949 on around £8 a week, which was his first professional contract and he showed me the contract years later.

My first job was in Barclays Bank, aged 16, in 1964 on £340 per year. After 12 months it went up to £370 per year!

The local pub close to the Bank charged 1 shilling & 8 pence for a pint of mild. Got drunk on a ten shilling note!

I used to cash a cheque in my bank for £5 and always liked to have 10 crisp and new 10 shilling notes - they were the days.

Following on I often went with an older chap to a nearby (2/3 miles away) sub-branch which was open between 10-3 and whilst he finished tilling up at 3pm I was sent to catch the 3.10 bus back to the main branch with a bag containing most of the days takings in cash, usually between £2 - £3 thousand, nearly 10 years of my salary!

started the same year myself at a local yorkshire bus company as a traffic clerk. when i was 18 i got my conductors licence and used to work in the evenings and saturday all paid at overtime rate. did my day job and managed over 40 hours conducting. what a pleasure it was to eventually take home just over 20 pound for that week. that 20 quid a week was everyones big goal in life to achieve at the time. no i did not spend it wisely, i was 18.

Whatever the merits of the wages back in the day, there are not many banks left in Hartlepool now , and that in itself tells a story

There were 5 banks back then;
Barclays
Lloyds
Midland
National Provincial
Westminster

Nat Prov merged with Westminster to get NatWest c1970

There were no Security Vans about then and money was sent via Royal Mail and we had to go and collect this from the local sorting office. It could be £25k and I used to go along with the Bank Manager and another male clerk, BM with a bag handcuffed to his wrist, the clerk with a "cosh" type thing and me with a whistle. The walk was about 1/2 mile and if we had been attacked we would have had no chance.

They were the days

We had a duty at Royal Mail , where it was the job of a couple of blokes to collect cash from the local sub post offices in and around Swindon. Now and again I would cover the job if the regulars were on annual leave, basically travelling around in a battered old security van, acting as a drivers mate. When the driver went into the post office to collect the cash, i just stood outside on lookout duties. Risky looking back, but it was a cushy number that got you out of a sweaty sorting office for a week or two.
