went into my local chip shop yesterday dinner time. one out one in policy. never wore one either and the owner will not attempt to inforce it. spent a few hundred quid on a perspex screen and does not want to put any customer off entering.

We've been wearing masks virtually from the off. However, we are very much in the minority and little has changed since they became mandatory on 24th July. The next day, a relatives mother was queuing to be served in her local post office. She was stood behind a woman fetchingly attired in this seasons dressing gown and slippers who was asked where her mask was. "It's in China", came the reply.

Shop staff don't seem to be bothering either (even in the chemists!) and as I left our small local supermarket recently, a black girl, using the hand sanitizer by the door, said to me that the situation was ludicrous. As we spoke, a couple of kids came in who she challenged about the absence of a mask. The first said that it was in his pocket while the other said he hadn't got one. She said "You're not coming in then" and also to several of their mates who had shown up. The shopkeeper chimed in with, "None of you are welcome in my shop after what you did yesterday." The first kid then said, "You don't need one if you are under twelve", something neither of us had heard of. That evening, Bozza announced that masks must be worn but kids under three were exempt. No mention at all of children under twelve. Bugger all. Zilch. The next day, however, I saw a statement saying that "museums, galleries etc. were being opened and that masks must be worn with the exception of children under eleven."

While out shopping recently, the missus decided to have her nails "done" so I passed the time with a coffee. I was last in there a couple of months ago where masks were worn and they didn't accept cash. Now, they happily took my shrapnel and the girl serving me said that masks weren't required. When one or two of our leaders were caught "doing a Cummings" with their hot drinks, I seem to recall Gove stressing the point that masks must be worn when sitting inside but it was okay to dive in and out without one if the place was being treated as a shop.

I keep hearing the expression that we need "clear guidance and leadership" but FFS, all these U-turns (is it eleven and rising?) are making me dizzy.

It was ridiculous and totally unfair to suggest that shopkeepers could monitor the wearing of masks or that the already overstretched Plod could intervene. It has been suggested that organized crime is behind these illegal raves amid fears that it may be necessary to have an Army presence.

Why say ‘a black girl using sanitiser’ would you have said a white girl? Just saying this as my son always picks me up when I come home from the match and say they had a big black centre half.

I take your point Johnjo and it's probably a habit along the lines you suggest.

That said, I thought it had a relevance considering the racism comments that have been bandied about.

thing is that a lot of shopkeepers, especially the ones who were forced to close, are happy for anyone to spend money in their shops especially family businesses. if someone unmasked is prepared to spend a few hundred quid with you then you will not cause much of a fuss.

Just a means of determining identification. If team was full of black players, probably wouldn't get said as it would have little purpose. If team is all white , people will say, the tall centre back, the ginger midfielder, the little winger, the bald bloke up front. Splitting hairs really and just a habit people have had from a time when a black person was a novelty, especially in towns like Hartlepool, still is, but in the modern world probably best to refain from using the term Black to describe anything.

but is it the black person who is bothered or some white person who for some reason gets bothered more. if you are black and look in the mirror then you know you are black and so what. only yesterday i was asked at the end of the game by a team for their man of the match. i said the black lad upfront. when saying something like that is frowned upon then all races are screwed.

I agree , I don't think this bothers decent ordinary people, black or white , just people who think they are not ordinary and aren't decent.

I imagine the gegs steaming up problem is less of a problem outdoors than inside? Going in the shops in a mask has given me a reason to wear my contact lenses again.

Labour want a lock down but Labour mayors won't accept Tier 3. All seems a little inconsistent to me.

In the absence of anything remotely resembling an effective track and trace system I'm not sure what this 'circuit break' idea is supposed to achieve other than to temporarily suppress the rate of infection so that it peaks later - maybe just in time for Christmas?

There's no vaccine on the near horizon that I can see.

there is more than 1 line to go down in dealing with everything in life. if all the facts given out are correct then the government and its pet scientists are getting it wrong. time to take advice from other top scientists who have a different take on the virus. it will not happen as no one especially politicians like to be proved wrong if another way was proven a better way.

The world is full of experts. They all know best and love their five minutes of fame. They can't agree with each other.
Governments across the world are being told to adopt the expert advice in how to deal with the pandemic. However when the advice is conflicting these same governments have to make a judgement on who's advice to follow. Whichever course they take, the opposition, the media, people who didn't vote for them start screaming for the opposite solution.
We have to remember that a medical expert sees it from a medical angle, an economic expert sees it from another angle and that is only two of them. Throw in another dozen or so and what do you get.
Then you come down the grades and arrive at a conglomeration of beer swillers, party goers, foreign holiday desperadoes, the rules don't apply to me brigade, keyboard warriors, why protect the vulnerable philosophers, etc etc etc.
I don't know who was responsible for coining the phrase " You can please some of the people all of the time and you can please all of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time". Whoever it was, this pandemic has proved him/her to be correct beyond doubt.
I don't pretend to know the answers and I don't envy the people tasked with trying to find them. What I do know is governments all across the globe are having to create the balancing act to compete with all balancing acts having taken ALL of the expert advice into consideration and not just the advice that suits them. Or the advice that scores political points.
I know a guy who praised our politicians to the high heavens, saying what a marvellous job they were doing until he found out that he couldn't go to his villa in Portugal, unless he quarantined on his return. Now they are all wankers. Boris is a wanker, Starmer is a wanker, the BBC have always been wankers and anybody else who dared to restrict his plans is a wanker. They've ruined his plans for Christmas now but I haven't found out the detail behind that statement as yet.
I think I also need to tell you he's a Wednesday fan

It wouldn't happen in Waitrose - not when everything costs 50% more!

might be that he has heard the rumour about the 6 rule and families allowed to mix just on christmas day being brought in. he cannot swerve the day from hell with the in laws now.

I can see the government relaxing the rules for Xmas for political popularity reasons with the medics shaking their heads in disbelief.
