Saw at the bottom of a report from The Northern Echo about Micky Nelson nearly being our manager twice over (https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/18466042.ex--hartlepool-defender-possible-return-victoria-park/ ) that Simmo and Micky Barron have launched a new podcast called Switch of Play:

Switch of Play has been launched by ex-Pools skipper Micky Barron and Mark Simpson, the club’s former media manager, with a number of former Pools players and managers lined up as guests in the coming weeks. It can be found on twitter, facebook, soundhound and You Tube.

Sounds/Looks good, hopefully we'll get to find out some of the answers to the big questions, like whether we actually DO have Darlo's old seats and who took the decision to serve bottles of water at lukewarm temperature.

Here's the YouTube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwnrTmTDLTY

Good luck to you both with it, I hope it lasts longer than the official ones did!

Pretty insightful stuff and for the future it should be interesting as nobody involved is under any sort of non disclosure so stuff will be interesting.

Had a listen to both Part 1 & 2 now, very entertaining and some good laughs in there - and great to finally hear what happened with Scooty and Ben Clarke in the dressing room! It seems the players didn't hate him anything like as much as we did.

All they need now is to set it up so you can get it via a normal Podcast App... shouldn't take much doing, Soundcloud just needs a few settings...

Wouldn’t say it was brilliant just a group of friends reminiscing the good times like most of us do on a Friday night in the pub. One or two things I thought came out was a dislike for Cyril Knowles And his style of management none of them mentioned the sad way in which he passed away or showed any sign of sympathy. They seemed happy when Alan Murray took over and training was just 5 aside
One other story which they seemed to find amusing was the Brian Honour court case. Whilst going to Crown Court was a bit over the top his behaviour was that of a football hooligan. I was stood With my grandchildren near to the incident where just a row of chicken wire separated the fans And Brian appeared to be absolutely sozzled held up on the shoulders of drunken yobs and provoking Darlo fans. I honestly expected the fence to give way and all hell would brake out. The least that should have happened was to have thrown him out of the ground but there was no way the police could have got into the crowd.

Well at the moment we can't sit in a pub on a friday night so this seems a pretty good alternative to me.

It's nice to hear stories from people who were there and lived some of the great pools moments from peoples past, me n my mates can chat about footy years but we didnt play in the team, go to training or hang out in the pubs with the team so its a bit different as we can hear first hand stories from people who lived it.

The whole "podcast" industry is massive with lots of former footballers getting together and telling stories and i love it, it makes a run, walk or drive that much better having these stories in my ears.

I am sure it probably wasnt the time or the place to talk about cyril dying.

I'm sure your feedback would be appreciated but based on that post i'm not sure podcasts or footy videos are really for you.

All I’m saying I wouldn’t call it brilliant. I would have liked to hear stories of behind the club like working for Gibson and IOR and different managers. I agree regarding Cyril but it was them who brought him into the conversation and I do believe they could have shown more compassion. Let’s not forget he saved us from relegation then built up a promotion team.

It’s still a work in progress I’d imagine as it’s literally the 2nd podcast they’ve done. I’m sure it’ll develop into a really good thing if they stick at it. I’d like to see a few more recent players/managers thrown into the mix for future episodes. I’m sure Hignett would have a few tales to tell......

Storm in a teacup. Its refreshing these days to hear anyone saying it as it is , rather than avoid upsetting people. It would've been nice for them to have balanced out the criticism of Cyril by stating what he achieved as a result of his tough regime , namely survival, promotion , a team capable of competing in league 1 and basically being the making of players like Bri and Nobbsy. A lot to fit into an hour though so maybe they just missed that bit. As far as I see it , it wasn't criticism as such , just saying he was ruthless , strict and tough , which he was . Old Skool , Cyril probably got this from Bill Nicholson at Spurs, who was also a Serjeant Major type. Bri must've been walking on hot coals , knowing that Cyril had let him go at Darlo , despite having played something like 40 odd games under him that season.

Really enjoying it. Would be interesting for Micky to interview Mark Simpson on his time at Pools, whether they’d want to do it so soon is another question but I always look forward to the next episode. Joel Porter next week!
