There was quite a few in those days, Hunter, Dave McKay, Tommy Smith, Ron Harris etc.

"The best defensive mid I've ever seen" is how I would describe him.

Legend. Ferocious tackler, in today's game he'd have been sent off every game. RIP Norman.

Easily the best defender I ever saw play and he was supposedly past his best by then. Can't imagine how good Bobby Moore must have been to keep him out of the England team. Seemed to be a very level-headed bloke as well. A class above the other 'hardmen' of his era because he was primarily an excellent footballer. RIP.

I wasn't aware Peter 'the cat' Bonetti had died at the weekend too. Another legend of that period.RIP.

Moore was way ahead of his time, he made it look so effortless.

Before my time but very well known to me being born and brought up in Leeds. A club very close to my heart and I have listened to him many a time on the radio. Always sounded a really decent bloke and really sad to hear he'd passed away.

You tended to find the hard men in general in those days were fairly innocuous blokes off the pitch.
Our very own John Gill of yesteryear, a prime example.

Very true. My wife and I were invited to a lunch in his honour ( it was his birthday) a few years ago and I was sat next to him. Perfect gentleman. It was held at Walsall on the day we surrendered a two goal lead and got walloped 5-2. Madjohn will know the date. His son Tim asked us to take him a Pools shirt. We did that and got Gill and number 5 printed on the back.
There was a tear in his eye when we passed it over.
Great day out, apart from the score.
A true Poolie legend.
He did not take prisoners.

First time I saw John Gill the person as opposed to football’s equivalent of the horsemen of the apocalypse, was catching the bus home post match from outside the Odeon. I was delayed talking to someone from school and when the No6 pulled up and I jumped on, he followed me and sat on the long bench seat opposite me on the double decker but I didn’t dare look at him.
I mentioned before his trips to the rec every Sunday morning with his little Yorkshire terrier complete with pink ribbon watching a match, when someone commented the dog didn’t look appropriate for him ...... till some was pointed out it was a ‘snack’.

Always remember him getting sent off for England v Argentina in a friendly ( allegedly ) in 1977. He lost two front teeth in a spat with an Argie called Bertoni , who was also sent off.

It was on tv , think it may have been live , Argentina didn't have colour tv then and the picture was appalling , it really did seem like it was at the other end of the world , in a hostile atmosphere England did very well to draw 1-1

And me. Felt sorry for Panini , when at start of this lockdown saw the album and stickers for this years Euro 2020 in the local CO-OP. I wonder what they do with them?

I reckon they’ll sell more than ever. Kids stuck in the house, they need something to occupy them for five minutes.
Remember the kids opening them and that ‘widows wail’ of “Aw we’ve got these ones”.

I heard the other day that it’s still going to be called EURO 2020 even though it’s going to take place in 2021 purely because all of the merchandise has already been produced.
