Absolutely comical. Pukki wasn’t offside, another good goal chalked off by the joy Hoover.

Surely Mike Riley has be sacked over this farce?

The camera adjudicating one seemed to be near the corner flag!

All of those lines and stuff they put on are them ‘calibrating’ it apparently but how can they can certain it was exactly when the ball was played? Plus even with the daft lines it wasn’t offside, who scores with an armpit? A defenders body shape will always be different to an attacker in that instance. That last season after seeing a very good goal wouldn’t have even been suggested as offside after the first replay now with this abomination it’s no goal!!!

Can I be the first to suggest VARVAR. Another video ref watching the video refs from a remote location to make sure they are making the right call. It could be any piss head in a pub anywhere in the UK and they'd probably improve the ratio of correct decisions.

For something designed to remove controversy to actually increase controversial decisions and become more of a talking point than the spectacle itself it surely has to go? I suspect it was introduced by Sepp Blatter's cronies as a decoy to hide their dodgy dealings.

And can they actually tell when the ball was played? If they get that wrong by 1 second the offside is totally wrong.

To be fair Mike Riley and Premier League have managed to make FIFA’s version look flawless and I hate that version

It’s not even one second that is an age in something so marginal that was apparently introduced to stop clear and obvious errors.

The calibration squiggles (read those two words and tell me the game isn’t gone  ) are wrong, if look at the lines on in grass Pukki is not even level with the defender he’s behind. His body shape is more attacking though as he’s reading the pass and wanting to score. It’s clearly not accurate the naked eye tells you that it is a farce.

Earlier this season in the Champions League didn't Ajax get a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside against Chelsea because the camera operator used the wrong frame when deciding when the ball was played

so many offences going on at every match. do not know why there is so much obsession anyway with offsides anyway. its causing problems at parks level football now where players are getting more and more obsessed by it and as a referee if you get the offsides right you,ll be seen to have had a good game.

How can you use technology to make decisions that 75% of the time are subjective and are a matter of opinion?. Jobs for the boys I'm afraid, another lay of bureaucracy that is slowly killing the beautiful game in the name of money.

Another good goal chalked off an absolute joke!!

Even when it was used properly for the Liverpool goal it took an absurd amount of time for a clear cut decision. It obviously hit his shoulder it wasn’t close to offside yet it took an age. Farcical stuff.

VAR is killing the game, should go like Cricket and Tennis. Each team get 3 challenges, if correctly challenge you keep it, lose it if incorrect. Once they're gone your back to Ref/Assistant Ref decisions.

It’s got no place in Football it doesn’t work it’s destroying the game.

Use goal line technology, bin it fit everything else subjective apart from absolute nailed on howlers like clear dives or acts of violent conduct or serious foul that the referee has missed. It should be in the background and and rarely used but maybe there if it’s needed. Riley has be sacked, the fella must have one enormous ego or simply hate the game.

ex football league and premier referee. what do you expect. he will know the laws of the game backwards apart from using common sense.

VAR, the geeks godsend. Common sense exits and obsessive pedantics take over.
Plus, the lunatic obsession with stats, ex players drawing squiggly lines on a screen after the event and what are these pages of notes shown to subs as they come on, shopping list for after the match....?

Before VAR people used to discuss brilliant goals, last-ditch tackles, silky skills and occasionally a controversial decision.

Now all people seem to discuss about top-level football is VAR and it's rarely positive. Let refs make mistakes, clear and obvious ones used to be rare, now an offside armpit counts as an obvious mistake.

Taking all the spirit and fire out of football. Can't even celebrate a goal properly as you've no idea if it's going to be chalked off. Proffessional football only exists as people pay to watch it. It is they, the spectators, whose opinion is most important

I rarely watch match of the day, but I did last night. Made me even more distant from the Premiershit. VAR is the worst thing to happen to the game ever. Completely destroying the game from a spectator and player point of view.

It clearly ruins it for players and managers too so presumably it's the refs getting us all back for criticising them over the years.

Yes agree but you can't go back to have very important games being decided by wrong referees decisions.we are stuck with it unless you change some of the rules eg what constitutes an off side.

Dont disagree with VAR in principle. I do disagree with the pathetic way it is being used to drain the excitement out of the game.

It should be used to clear up bad mistakes by the Ref or Linesman, not for tight offside calls.

Gary Lineker posted an interesting article that basically proved that as there is no way to know exactly when the ball was struck there could be anything up to a 15cm inaccuracy in VAR offside calls.

If they keep VAR then the offside law simply HAS to change.

the offside laws need changing till they can be implemented properly both in the premier league and parks football. the majority of the game is still played at the latter proper grass roots but is rarely thought about.

Just get rid of offside altogether.

That would be silly, it wouldn’t surprise me though as they seem Hell bent on destroying the game.

Nothing needs changing except for the removal of the pedants running the laws at present. VAR seems to have removed any sort of common sense ny the decision makers. Which isn't really a surprise as football referees seem to be least common sense people alive.

for years i,ve always fancied to continue the line across the field from the edge of the penalty area to the touchline. you can only be offside if you are the oppositions goal side of this line at the time the ball is played to you. at least one foot on the line or in your part of the pitch at that time.

I don't think getting rid of offside would be that stupid. I don't think it would make much difference in reality, because most teams use 11 players all over the pitch. The likelihood of a player being sacrificed to stand on the edge of the box is unlikely, and even if they did do that controlling a long hoof down field and converting it into a goal can be a lot more difficult than chasing a long hoof and scoring.

I think they tried it somewhere a few years ago and it was a farce.

It would completely change the game.

The game itself has been alright for a lot of years why do people want to reinvent the wheel? Offside is an accepted is part of the game and part of the game for a good reason, what isn’t is good goals being ruled out by inconclusive technology that even the makers admit isn’t 100% accurate.

FIFA are the law changers. i do know that a few years ago that offsides were not seen as much of a problem abroad as they were seen to be in this country. they supposodly to have defended differently than we do.

Getting rid of offside is akin to getting rid of the forward pass in rugby. Daft.

Surely really.simple technology exists which would sort this out?

Namely, put location devices in the soles of boots. That way you can tell instantly if someone was ahead of another player without the need for all the fanny on.
