With the push to convert us all over to Electric cars what will we do with all the petrol that is produced when crude oil is refined?
Presumably it will still be produced?

Any chemical engineers/ chemists out there?

Just asking for a friend sctatchinghead

Saw VW's environment gadgie speaking a couple of weeks ago and he reckoned they would sell their last petrol cars in 2040 so, with a ten year lifespan, there'll be no petrol VWs on the road by 2050. Didn't like to tell him that my van is 48 and going strong. In fact, now that I've got twin carbs I can probably use most of that surplus petrol just going to the shops and back.

They will need it to produce electricity from the generators, as there will be a lack of capacity from the power stations and wind turbines.

Sir James Dyson has ditched plans to build electric cars as it is not commercially viable.

I reckon they’ll turn all the roads into a giant Scalextric and if we go round the corners too fast we’ll come off at the corner.

I worked briefly for a ‘Big 6’ energy firm, and they had estimated one electric car doing average mileage (10-12k per year) would double the electricity consumption of a property. Still cheaper than the alternative quantity of petrol/diesel, but as you say, capacity of the grid will be the failure point.

If they put those chicanes in life could get interesting but I like the idea of sitting in there pressing down hard on a plastic thumb controller.

No cars at all is the Nissan bosses comment if we leave the EU with no deal.

"If a no-deal scenario means the sudden application of WTO tariffs, we know in that case our business model won’t be sustainable in the future."

Sunderland 61% voted leave......i wonder how many work or are dependent on the Sunderland plant.

didn,t seem that long ago there was talk about possible winter black outs at peak usage times. that was without electric vehicles.

I don't think the Electricity needs is as bad as some make out, as the primary charge time for a lot of them is going to be overnight - when often there's a surplus of energy at the moment, hence whatever Economy 7 is called these days as a reason to use it. Think of it as a gigantic storage system for electricity generated but not immediately used overnight and it actually makes a sort of sense. The main problems I see with it so far are the lack of range of the cars themselves (great if you're a city commuter but not if you're doing much else), and the lack of charging infrastructure - I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of public charging-points within ten miles of me, and if you don't have at least a driveway then forget it. If the government seriously want to get everyone onto Electric, then they will need to put the money into the infrastructure first - then offer a really good scrappage scheme. I don't see it happening any time soon....

The cars are on the expensive side and I dont do enough miles for the petrol savings to compensate (even coupled with free tax). If i food enough miles, range might become a factor. On economics alone, it's a no from me.

It’s possible, but it would be 24 metres x 74 metres.
