In all this fuss over the anniversary there is never a mention that the bloke who actually made it possible was a Nazi. I don't mean as your modern day insult, I mean an actual card carrying member of the SS. (Werner von Braun)

Surely everyone who happened to be born in Germany in that particular part of the 20th century was a Nazi? I mean wasn’t it pretty much obligatory? Even the last Pope was one wasn’t he?

I find that speculation about the existence of "die glocke" a bit far fetched mind you, to leap from rocket power to anti gravity travel is one hell of a jump.

Operation paperclip!

I'd say it was great foresight on America's part but the Soviets had the same idea. For all the bad press a lot of good came out of WW1 and 2 in terms of engineering and science. I suppose the threat of annihilation is a reasonable motivator.

Yes we need WW3 and then the Mail website might be readable.

There was a documentary on BBC4 this week, covering just the thing Mr I alleges above. The evidence suggests he was a committed party member, not just someone going along for the ride.

Plenty of dubious people have gone on to greater things.
Apollo 11 was an American-organized achievement but at the end of the day a human achievement. More than half of today's humanity weren't alive during the Apollo missions and still haven't seen anybody go farther into space than the ISS.

But yes, we should definitely have tried to do it without the world's foremost rocket scientist. For shits and giggles.
