Is he a specialist left back with a number 3 on his back?

Gus Mafuta, good signing that, big tackler in midfield! Just a left back and we are sorted!. We have so many midfield players now!

Sounds like he fits the bill as to what we need.

By my reckoning thats two teams of full time pro's we can now field...

---------------Killip------------
Kioso-----Kerr-----Raynes-----Kitching
-------Holohan-----Noble--------
Molyneux---Hawkes----James
--------------Kabamba---------

------------------------Catterick
Donaldson--Cunningham--Anderson--Richardson
--------------------------Bale----------------------------
-------------Mafuta----------------Featherstone------
------------------------Williams----------------------
-------------------Muir-----------Toure

Probably someone iv missed aswell. Going to be a fair few not happy and not even getting on the bench. Hopefully we arrange plenty of reserve fixtures etc.

Wasn’t he the fella who got subbed in the last match cos he was a red card waiting to happen?

If so then he’s certainly not shy about getting stuck in. Could be just what we need.

I couldn't even guess what combination he will choose in the middle. Nice to have options but for the size of the squad I still think we lack in both full back areas. Kioso definitely 1st choice right back but I've never been convinced by Richardson and we don't have an out and out left back, much rather play kitching there than Anderson tho

Didnt understand resigning both Featherstone and Noble at the time and makes even less sense to me now we brought this guy in. However Hignett knows best!

Like you I have no idea what 11 he will pick.

Raj is certainly backing Hignett though by the looks of it so fair play to him.

Sometimes I think a manager will panic and resign players incase he doesn't get the targets hes after and could end up with players worse than we have. He won't be able to keep them all happy!

I’d like to think the competition for places will make players keep improving and impressing to keep hold of the shirt, how many times last season did Featherstone and Noble just cruise or go missing in games purely cos there was no one to take their place

Mafuta sounds like a decent addition to the squad, but 8 players competing for 3 midfield places does sound a bit mental - not to mention that Donaldson is only pretending to be a full back and is really another midfielder.

Hignett is going to have to be completely ruthless during the season and drop anyone whose level of performance slips below top notch. As Jesus - or maybe it was Brian? - said, "It is easier for a footballer to enter the Kingdom of Heaven than to get into Hartlepool's midfield."

I think he will go 4-2-3-1 mafuta and featherstone or noble holding, hawkes,Williams or holohan no 10 and molyneux, James,Williams, Toure for out wide and probably kabamba up top. Bale....no idea where he fits in just now.

More likely Hawkes will go. Catterick needs games so I reckon he'll be going out on loan. After that its anyone guess what will be starting 11

It just occurred to me that Hawkes might be allowed to go now that Pools have so many midfield players. Does anyone else think this is a possibility?

My prediction is £0.5M to Huddersfield.

that sums it up really well for me. on paper the team does look stronger than it did 12 months ago but the proof will be how they perform on the pitch once the season starts. not all signings come off and even alex ferguson made mistakes. we,ll just have to wait and see before we get over excited or start sharpening knives.

Hignett has said he rates Featherstone, if Mafuta is the tough tackling midfielder we've needed for years then Featherstone will be able to play further forward where he always looked better in my view.

Competition for midfield spots is going to be strong, can't see how that's a bad thing. Any not up to the competition can be shipped out without having to wait for the next transfer window at this level, obviously depending on another club wanting them.

I'd say overall the squad looks better than the one that started last season. A goalie who comes of his line and a striker who can score goals will always be an improvement on Loach and Cassidy! There's still obvious weaknesses but hopefully they won't be exposed when we're dominating games!

Featherstone, Noble, Hawkes, Holohan, Bale, Williams, Mafuta, Molyneux. You could argue Molyneux is a winger I suppose but he's listed as a midfielder on the OS - as is Donaldson.
