My sister bought one of those kits and it reckons she's 3% Norwegian, which is nice.

The thing I want to know is, what time period is it fixed over? Like do they say if your ancestor lived in Oslo in 900 AD, that counts? But what if they rowed over to ransack St Hildas and ended up settling down with a local lass?

Can go back centuries and all the way back to first humans in some cases, just a case of which dominant genes have been passed down or one that don't really go away. You can find with these kits that you can have some either very distant Asian or African genes (0.01% or less), which is put down to where humans actually came from. I believe most people from the north east/northern Britain will have Norwegian/Swedish ancestry etc. due to the vikings and all that. But the percentage should give a rough guide as to how far back it is, for example 75%-100% should be parents and then dilute from there, but it's not an exact measurement given the dominant nature of some genes. I personally like the neanderthal percentage of genes...

Correct it also tells you if you get your profile how many homozygous alleles you have at a give loci (eg how many of the same your mam and dad have at same sites) basically showing how inbreed you are.

Have to say the north east especially the villages do show very high signs of this and I did a project on it at uni.

It wont tell you about are you susceptible to diseases etc as its based on junk DNA which isn't coded just random repeats of base pairs ATCG etc which make up your profile but don't do anything as we know of as yet. To get this information you need to sequence your whole genome.

Was doing the old family tree stuff a couple of years back and it is addictive. What I found amazing is you go back to your great grandparents and get a surprise or two. You think your family have been here for ever, but I found that while about half were fron the headland, the rest were from Berwick, one was a ships captain from Great Yarmouth, one Irish and one German.
Funnily enough, the one from Yarmouth’s house he was born in is still in use as a family residence.

That's kind what I was getting at, but I didn't explain meself very clearly.

We all ultimately evolved out of Africa, but to say someone is say 10% Slavic, at what point in time do they decide what constituted Slavic genes?

Is it the population of Slavic countries today? That's the only way I think you could do it given the nature of people roaming about and mixing gene pools relatively quickly even thousands of years ago.

The bunker really is a fountain of knowledge.

Always on hand to answer queries on lack of white dogshit, family DNA, the decrease in usage of cork and which shit phone to buy your kids.

Yes, i'd say migration is more of a recent thing with travel becoming easier, that's why you can identify certain genetic traits to regions as they will have replicated those same genes over many thousands of years with only minimal outside mixing. But you can still see strong genetic traits in the countries indigenous populations. I don't think there is an exact science to when say 10% was in a time point, it ultimately depends on the genes that were handed down but you could have a rough guess at where depending on the percentage, i'd just keep halving it down each generation back...
