The eldest is getting out and about on his own a lot now, so I want to get him a basic phone for texting and calling.

I don't to get him a smartphone yet as he's bound to lose/knack it.

Any ideas on what to get? Also what sort of contract/sim etc?

Phone - not sure, you not got an old one knocking about?
SIM - look at Giffgaff if O2 is OK where you are - you can get some decent deals for under a tenner, including a fiver a month for 150 mins, 500 texts plus 500MB Data (even basic phones tend to have some internet enabled stuff)... Only reason I'm not with them any more is that O2 is terrible where I am (or at least was a couple of years back - not even 3G) so I switched elsewhere... Currently with Plusnet (on EE) - they're OK.

I was due an upgrade so I just gave my old phone to my daughter, I got her a SIM only deal with Virgin, they had a sale when I got it and I think it only costs me £6 or £7 per month, I think she gets 1000 texts, 1000 minutes and 2GB of data.

I think that younguns nowadays tend to use data rather than text messages as they use the likes of Snapchat or WhatsApp to stay in touch with each other

Still pining for the Nokia I had 10 years ago. Did the job as it was brilliantly and you could use it for days on a single battery charge.

Smart phones are too bastad smart for their own good, I ignore 95% of what mine can do but still sick to death of WhatsApp for work groups - have it on and it drives you mental, ignore it and stuff gets decided without you.

I don’t think Yubep was particularly trying to be funny. He was giving him some advice. Pretty sound advice I’d suggest. Phones are like trainers were when we were at school. Don’t send your kid in with a Nokia two stripe or a Gola Motorola.

Aye I was just trying to give him some advice like. I have a 13 year old, 10 year old, 6 year old and 4 year old so I’m pretty up to date with what the kids are down with.

There is French brand called Crosscall and they're designed to be very hard to knack. Got my lad one about a year and a half ago and it is still in perfect condition even though he drops it regularly, stands on it every now and then and puts it into his drinks to show off (they're waterproof as long as you shut the cover on the usb port. His is the last model they did so it was a lot cheaper than most phones even though it does all the usual stuff. Going to get one myself when my current phone dies.

The days of simply having a phone to text your mates are done.

Snapchat. Instagram. What’s app. Fb messenger etc etc are probably more popular than texting.

The only person who ever sends me a text is my mam. Which says it all.

You can get fairly cheap smart phones in places like CEX or a cheap contract on a HUWAII phone on most providers.

Just to reiterate my 4 year old doesn’t have a mobile just my 13 year old but even he plays on a PS4 and can use an iPad.

Times are changing.

Funnily enough I’m exactly the same regarding who I get texts from. The only person who ever texts me is your Mam.

Thanks for all the help folks. I'll get him something robust that won't attract negative attention, pre-loaded with texts off Yubep's mam.
