My eldest is off their next week? Anyone know what it’s like these days?

I went in 94 n it was pretty brutal. I imagine it’s probably toned down a bit now for the new generations.

My only memory of Carlton Camp is the gift shop and some bottles with cotton wool in which smelt of various War smells, gunpowder and stuff like that.

I believe I went twice, first time was fairly interesting. 2nd time was possible the dullest day of my life.

I went in the 60's with the juniors, we considered organising an escape committee, hated it. Mind you it was a bad year as I was banned from the school trip to the Lakes aged 9.

Was it? sctatchinghead

In that case iv never been to Carlton Camp so I retract my previous review.

Place I went to we ate our pack lunches in a war shelter I believe. I believe the gift shop also sold dog tags and replica bullets and shit.

Not aware of the joke to be honest, will I find it in Monkeybutts thread?

Thought it was great - went a couple of times.

A cracking initiative by Hartlepool Borough Council way back in the day..................

I went aged 11 in the mid 80s. Was a scream.

Went to Dukes House Wood twice whilst at Brierton, that was also superb.

Couple of trips to Carlton Camp while in the juniors. It was a lot better than Boys Brigade Camp, nobody showed you their testicles during inspection at Carlton camp.

Remember going up Brown Hill. Low cloud/ fog wringing wet while this bloke in shorts and kagoul pointed out the delights of sheep droppings and what the contents revealed. Probably Bear Grylls Granda. He was in ecstasy or taking it.

As a punishment for three or four incidents of (alleged) bad behaviour in and around Rift House Juniors reported to Mr Tozer by Miss Halliday - my place on the trip to Carlton Camp was cancelled, and given to another, more deserving child.

Can't help but think I dodged a bullet there mind...

I think it would be good if all young kids from age 12- 16 attended a Carlton Camp type place for at least 1 month a year , and without their mobile phones.

Funny you should mention that we took the iPads off the kids 3 weeks into the summer holidays. They asked for them for a day then quickly moved on n haven’t even mentioned them since, All 3 are in a draw turned off. They quickly find other things to do. It’s been a good break and nice to see them do different things.

Can't see it working in Boro, who'd looked after their kids?

It's amazing how quick they revert to being kids and just playing like we used to when we were young.

I stayed in a place in the Lakes on Monday night, a youth hostel called Black Sail Hut, remote is not the word. Me and my son got there, soaking wet after a 18 mile yomp, our clothes were still wet the following morning , despite them being in the drying room overnight , we also arrived that late , we missed the evening meal. My son was going nuts because he couldn't get a mobile phone signal and his phone charger had become rather moist shall we say, I was in hysterics.

I don't know if any fellow bunkerites have had the pleasure , but I would strongly reccomend it , great place to take the kids or punish the missus for excessive use of the credit card.

It only holds 16 people , so you would need to book well in advance. Only accessible on foot or by off road vehicle.

Great that there are still places like this in our country.
