What is the difference between Holland and the Netherlands?

And why are they known as Dutch rather than Hollander or whatever?

The difference between the Netherlands and Holland is the Netherlands is the term for the country as a whole, while Holland refers to just the two provinces of North and South Holland. The fact that these are two of the most densely populated provinces where most of the country's major cities are concentrated makes the term "Holland" a convenient short-hand for the more cumbersome "the Netherlands".

‘Dutch’ has evolved over time but in short, use the term Dutch to describe the people of the Netherlands, Holland when referring to the provinces of North and South Holland (it is correct and appropriate to say that you are traveling to Holland if you are visiting Amsterdam, for example), and the Netherlands when speaking about the country as a whole.

(With thanks to Google!)

The country was made up of Duchys until it was unified by King Philip of Spain, who called the united country the Netherlands which is Dutch for Lowlands, so Dutch became the National language. We translate the Netherlands as Holland which is a bastardisation of Ye Olde English Ho Low Lands. William of Orange and his influence is why the Dutch sporting teams wear Orange. Also the National anthem pledges the Dutch will follow loyally the Spanish Kings!

This is how pre season Saturdays fly!!!!!

Ik spreekt Nederlands.
I don't like, but I know how to say it, with the stress on the Ned.

true indeed. British people always struggle when having to work with efficient, productive people. Shows up very quickly why uk productivity lags behind other countries

Was more on about the rudeness and expectation of emotional connection in a provider/client relationship to be honest. I'd say my work ethic kicks the shit out of theirs. Nice try though.

To be fair I said I know how to say it, not how to conjugate it. A Belgian taught me 'cos they call Flemish Nederlands too.

A bit like when some Swedes taught me how to say Örebro. Or sing it more like, with Swedish being a tonal language n'all..
I promised I'd follow Örebro's results if they followed Pools'. That was a year ago so I hope they didn't keep their end of the bargain.

The Dutch are very enterprising they left us behind in the Oil and Gas Industry first of all with the Heavy Lift Crane Vessels, Hermod, Balder etc for lifting the Modules then the vessel which was used to remove the Brent Delta.
I have an indifferent opinion of the Dutch people, working alongside them I found some very friendly and helpful and others arrogant gits who looked down on you and thought they were the master race.

Yes im in complete agreement about the arrogance. A lot of dutch people miss the fine dividing line between self confidence and arrogance completely, and we are a blackhall colliery/ amsterdam family

They are strange like, some would say unfriendly as well, I just find they are very straight laced and literal. I was on a train over there recently. Me and my son were having a conversation in the quiet carriage, talking at a normal tone, when this dutch bloke opposite , looked daggers at us and pointed to the sign on the wall QUIET CARRIAGE. Over there QUIET means exactly that , you don't talk at all. Our gentle conversation was interfering with this bloke reading a book. As someone who has experienced the so called quiet carriage on British trains, where anything short of shouting out aloud is considered polite, me and my son were gobsmacked.

I'd go along with all of that. I love the place although some of their bicycle riders need taking out. Central station must be one of the must dangerous places in the World to cross the road.

This is true, due to their language and pronunciation, the Dutch have the highest rate of throat/layrnx cancers in the World. I saw that on a documentary.
