I quite liked having pundits like Jurgen Klinsmans and Slavin Bilic on the panels during the world cup. I thought they gave a different insight. However, I couldn't see why Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs were invited. Neither had illustrious world cup careers and Giggs was nearly always injured when it came to playing international football.

Let’s be honest, who did we actually beat, a poor Panama side very fortunate against Tunisia and beaten by Belgium Reserves which enabled an easier route too the finals.
When they came up against real opposition apart from Sweden they struggled to score goals from creative play relying on set pieces.
Harry Kane, Golden Boot, 3 penalties, a forteuse deflection of his heel and 2 striker type goals, he disappeared in the last 2 games albeit I suppose Sterling was played upfront for his pace.
The criticism of Southgate will come when the euphoria dies down, in the second half Croatia were controlling the game and Southgate for me didn’t know what to do tactically apart from making like for like substitutes.

Overall Southgate did a very good job with limited resources. That does not mean that he is beyond criticism. Why he persisted in playing Young, who is right-footed, on the left-hand side defeats me. Every time (except once) he turned back inside. The first chance Danny Rose got was in extra time of the Croatia game, when our left-hand side became an attacking threat.

I don’t buy all of this ‘luck’ talk tournament is about progression not how you do it, Croatia haven’t won a game in normal in the knockouts but ego cares they are in the final.

Possibly a fair point on Rose I thought he was the one in the Belgium that might have staked a claim to a starting spot in the best eleven but at same time he was at fault for the goal. Surely the World Cup was success for England, we went in with our youngest ever squad with our lowest expectation levels yet at worst are going to have our joint second best ever. Nobody has said we are a great side or even got ahead themselves they have just enjoyed the ride whilst seeing things to be positive about going forward. Southgate has been a credit to our country as well. The next major tournament is partly being held here and with another two years progress I see plenty to be optimistic about.

could not care less about what other countries in britain think about the world cup coverage but what always gets me are those in the media who never see a game all season except maybe the f.a. cup final become experts on the game for a few weeks and in the end totally put me off.. as for footballs coming home, its never left between august and may ever year.

Leaving aside the chippy Celts, we all had fun with 'It's coming home' till Croatia put England out, and then the Croat and French fans had some fun with us. Fair does.

Managing expectations for the Euros in 2020 could be a problem though. It seems odds on that the media will go straight back to 'we're gonna win it' pre-tournament hype, assuming we qualify for the finals, which hasn't been any sort of problem recently.

A lot rests on how Gareth Southgate sets the tone. He said after the Final on Sunday that England aren't currently in the top 4 or 5 in the world. Personally I doubt we're in the top 10 - England took full advantage of being in the easiest half of the draw, but the best team in the entire tournament that we actually beat was Sweden.

More realistically, Southgate said his team were about 6 years behind Croatia in terms of their development. Agree with that, and I hope he carries on promoting the talent coming through from the U-18 and U-19 sides in the next couple of years. England won't win anything with their current midfield, and over-reliance on Harry Kane up front won't work either.

I don't understand the negativity surrounding England and their performance in the world cup. We got to the semi finals, doesn't matter how we got there. England in italia 90 had a similarly "easy route" to the semi's but everyone has rose tinted specs for that. If we'd been beaten by Sweden or Columbia certain people would've been jumping up and down saying "I told you so". It's pathetic, if you don't revel in England doing well don't watch them.

At a guess, I enjoyed England's run in the World Cup as much as you did. Would have just loved to have got to the final and beaten the cunning French. Was planning to go to a fan zone for it, to hoy beer in the air when we scored and the whole bit.
Now it's over a bit of perspective on how far we've still got to go to get on a level with France, Croatia, Belgium and a few others doesn't count as negativity in my book, even if it does in yours.
