Two utterly amazing players in the same generation, but who's the best?

On many levels I prefer Messi, for the way he wriggles through defences before scoring as if the ball is tied to his foot as much as for the fact that he seems quite normal and Ronaldo always comes over as a ridiculous preening peacock.

But Messi has it all to do this World Cup after Ronaldo's impact on the game last night. Surely the last World Cup for the both of them - how far can they take their teams?

I can see them both being at the next World Cup they are 31 and 33 but look no different to 10 years ago.

Do we need a ‘best’ they are very different players that achieve similar outstanding results and score absurd amounts of goals. I reckon we should appreciate them rather than this constant comparison.

What a game that was last night though Spain were brilliant at times but were denied victory by one man (and more pissed goalkeeping)

I'd beg to differ, Ronaldo has improved with time by looking after himself. Messi, for me, isn't as exciting to watch as his younger self. I'm definitely more of a Messi fan but at times when I've watched him this season he's looked burnt out. There's no doubt in my mind Ronaldo will have the better tournament as he had a long spell out injured during the season so he should be fresh.

I'm just glad the world cup had started for real now, what a game last night and enough to get excited about today.

I fully expect a war of words over Piqué's dedication to the greater Spanish cause last night.
As for Messi vs Ronaldo, Messi has the advantage of not having played for two teams I can't stand. So I'm subjectively biased.

Pools need to find a player who’s burnt out who can score 45 times in a season whilst being burnt out

I think people forget how young Messi is he doesn’t actually turn 31 until a week tomorrow, and I think Ronaldo will play until he’s 40 he’s such a physical specimen. I’d say they have both changed how they play as well if anything Ronaldo has transformed more from a flashy preening step over merchant winger to a powerful out and out number 9.

He scored less goals than number of games he played in. That surely goes down as a failure for him?

Time will tell I suppose but I wouldn’t go overboard after one game against opposition like Iceland. Ironically Ronaldo shot his toys out of the pram after a similarly frustrating 90 minutes in Portugal’s first game of the Euros and you know what happened after that.

You have to admire what Iceland have achieved with such a small population it’s incredible but I think I might just check the score for the next game they play, Brazil 1970 they are not!

It's sad I suppose, we'd all like to see the best of players at international tournaments.
Iceland play to their strengths, like a poor man's Atlectico Madrid. If Pools played like that they'd undoubtedly be more successful but folk would shingle no doubt.

I concur regarding Atletico and to a lesser extent Burnley, but I can’t go as far Iceland I’m sorry they are grim to watch but admirably hard to beat, it’s like they have been created in factory to bore the shit out of everyone I really hope they don’t get out of the group I want more games like last night.

Denmark and Greece won Euro boring everyone to death. I would take England doing that every day of the week

Also Portugal, they didn’t win a game in 90 until the Semi Final.

This is the World Cup though I want England to do as well as possible however possible but I want to enjoy the other games. Given that I hope Iceland only play three games. People from Iceland should be rightfully proud of this team it’s an incredible story.

Iceland are a good team, they just will never be involved in a good game of Football at this level if they are they will lose.

Nigeria were on a new level of hopeless in that game in was like a friendly tempo. It could be down to ‘pashun’ as on looking at the team I reckon an individual kidnapping victim of Boko Haram has spent more time in Nigeria than the combined squad.

Victor Moses is clearly affected by a hypergravitational pull.

Tunisia took parking the bus to a new level last night. I never want to see them play ever again (nor the referee ever again).
