Caught an item on the radio this morning about a police force recruiting graduates, putting them on a a twelve week course and hey presto they're detectives. Really?
What next, a fecking airline pilots licence if you've built ten Airfix aeroplane kits and flown a kite?

I remember working for a manager ten years ago who asked about where I'd worked, the manager was not connected to the work I did incidentally.
He said to me " Oh you have an engineering background, I have too. During my summer off from Uni I spent three weeks working in a bike shop fitting spokes...... Badly I should add".
I asked him if his name was Brunel.... Went straight over his head.

It's all the rage these days Snowy man, all you need is a 6 week summer school and you can be a teacher! Except, you know paid the same as a teaching assistant. Same goes for social workers, and it'll be nurses next.

Our lass is a fully qualified teacher with 15 years' experience who works as a supply teacher from choice. Used to be ok for her, but these days there's more call for teaching assistants on just above minimum wage to 'mind' the kids when they should be getting an education. And the worse the behavioral problems in a school, the more full-time teachers go off on the sick, so it's a vicious circle for kids and staff.

Then the said teachers leave after 3 months because they have no clue and think its going to be an easy ride. They're told to leave by the school after 6 months because they're useless... or they go on to complete their NQT year to then not have their contract renewed because.... you got it... they're useless...

About 1 in 10 of these teachers actually continue to teach

Glad to see you share your extensive knowledge in useless teachers Dan!

I applied for one of these gradschemes when I left uni. I was struck by the number of people applying for it that had no intention of being a teacher, they wanted to work in the Civil Service and Teach First offered the best route. It's a surprise to me as many as 1 in 10 continue to teach.

The reality is that none of the courses for public services really prepare you for the job. However, the current trend of smashing everyone through a gradscheme seems to be completely stupid... Until you remember they pay them loads less than someone with a bonified teaching qualification.

Funny you should mention the civil service. A recent teach first that we had left after their two years to go into the civil service. They applied for teach first after applying for a civil service job. They were told if they did two years teaching they would then be suitable for the job they had applied for... banghead

I remember talking to a police sergeant who said we don't need graduates, we need people with common sense.
Just as a matter of interest, how many hours does a student in Uni actually spend in lectures a week?

Depends on the subject. From memory, my Eng Lang. and Lit. degree had about 10 hours of lectures and 4 hours of contact time with tutors in seminars a week. But students can't be blamed for the way their university courses are structured.

I knew a lad who was doing a philosophy degree and he used to have a single hour that he had to attend every week. Unfortunately his devotion to smoking cannabis while stroking kittens and wearing eye liner meant that he couldn't quite manage to get there on a regular basis and was asked to leave.

Loads of professions are being dumbed down, run on the cheap, corners cut etc. It is creating a big timebomb which combined with austerity and a shite economy is going to result in no end ov misery for ordinary people in this country. All in it together?
