Brake shoes or pads or something to stop the grinding noise!

They have been feeling spongy for a while and stopping takes longer, could be goosed I fear.

Sounds like pads but with the grinding you've probably knackered the discs too. Definitely don't drive it until you get it properly diagnosed. Try having a look through the wheel at how much friction material is left on the front pads. If you're not up to changing pads and discs then get a mobile mechanic to do it. It's a piss easy job if you know what you're doing. 20/30 minutes a wheel unless its discs then add another 15 minutes each corner.

I presume a man of your experience has tried turning the car off and back on.

Did 250 miles yesterday and no problem, got home and it started grinding, used gears to slow down and got it booked in tomorrow.

I did turn it off and on and no change, would have been a cheaper option!

might get away with just new disk pads on the front or back whichever is grinding. hope you have not booked into quick con fit as you,ll end up with new disks no matter what plus anything else they will want to replace.
