However if the hosts have their thoughts on the playoffs, we could do better.

Can see Pools winning this one, I imagine they’ll be resting a lot for the playoffs

5-0 Tranmere, 301 Poolies - any lingering doubts that 95% of this Godawful squad must be chased down the A19 by fair means or foul dispelled once and for all.

I think we had sold 400 tickets yesterday for a game were you can pay on the gate so your away following is already wrong. I can see a Desmond here Tranmere have nothing to play for non of the players want injuries or bans now and they score and concede a few. 2-2 Cassidy and an Adams long range effort for us after being 2-0 down, to an Andy Cook brace, 704 Poolies.

Last time I was at Tranmere some loanee of ours missed a penner, we got a man sent off, and the rest of the team conspired to make Calvin Zola look like Messi

Without those incidents I'd say it's a nailed on win.

Tranmere 1 Pools 2.

Thought tranmere might play their reserves today but they seem at full strength so I'm saying tranmere 3-0 pools.

I know the brand of football played under Bates has been far from spectacular, but you can't argue with his ability to get a result.

So out of the 14 games we have played against the teams that finished in the top seven that was our only win.

Nice end to the season but it can’t mask what work needs to be done in the summer.

That was a quality day out. Can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a match so much.
I’m struggling to process this season. Reasons for hope at the start, utter, utter desperation then something like euphoria today with survival, real togetherness from the fans and then the team actually played well. Jesus you’ve got to be made of tough stuff to be a pools fan!
We got to the end more or less in one piece though. Let’s hope that win sets us up for August. Much hard work ahead.

The annoying thing is we should even with everything that happened this season from a genuine feeling that it could be our last in our current form and as a result ending up with a absolute bare bones squad, finished in the top half. We picked up 1 point from very recent home games against Torquay, Solihull and Guiseley for a start that is before thinking back to being managed by a bloke who I felt was a nice man but out of his depth for most of the season. In spite of everything that happened we still should have finished higher. We were competitive and 'in' just about every game we played, I think we only really got stuffed once or twice and those really low points seemed to coincide with the time the overall future looked the most grim.

At least we finished gloriously as the highest placed Non League team in the North East, but being serious I think all of this gives us hope for next year that if we can get our house in order we can be up there in this League, recruit well with players and maybe even more the manager and I see absolutely nothing to fear at this level of Football, even the teams at the top aren't very good. Top seven is an absolute minimum next season.

Budget cuts or not, teams of our stature should be realistically aiming for the top seven

After getting my hopes up last season that we'd turned a corner I'm not letting myself get too confident.

I can't see a squad overhaul again, more getting numbers down and a few better quality signings in and to be fair I don't we'd need much more to compete in this league.

That sounds very similar to what Leeds fans used to say in League One to endear themselves to rival fans.

We are still a full time team getting some of the bigger attendances in the division - my point was that whatever changes we have we absolutely still need to have ambitions of the top seven

So Matthew Bates achieved Horden's target of 4 points from the last 2 games and whoever it was who was bemoaning Pools finishing the season lower than Halifax and Solihull Moors needn't have worried - we finished above both of them and Gateshead too.

Thanks Matty - you passed the caretaker manager audition. Shame that isn't the type of new broom new chairmen are generally looking for but hey, that's football.
