Is it just me or has Newkie Brown changed? Heineken claim not!

"To coincide with the debut of Newcastle Brown Ale’s new look, production of Newcastle Brown Ale has officially moved from the John Smith’s Brewery in the U.K. to the Zoeterwoude Brewery in Holland. When asked about the move, General Manager, Five Points Trading Company, Charles (Chas) Littlefield commented, Moving production of Newcastle Brown Ale to Holland makes sense for our distributor partners and our consumers alike. The move allows us to improve service levels including shorter order lead times, faster transportation to the U.S. and fresher product for our consumers. Despite the move, Newcastle Brown Ale fans can rest assured that the original recipe has not changed guaranteeing them the best, freshest quality Newcastle Brown Ale they love, every time, whether purchasing at retail or at their favorite local bar or restaurants.”

To answer, not really, NBA was brewed in Newcastle, then Dunston, then Tadcaster, now Holland. The USA is the biggest market, followed by Russia, then the UK. The new owners will be wanting to make the most profit from a leading brand, ergo economies of scale.

It will of changed with each move. One of the most important elements of beer is the water; change the source, and the beer will change. I once had a pint of Castle Eden Ale in London (not long after the brewery was bought out); it bore no relationship to Castle Eden Ale when it was brewed in the NE. While water, on the face of it, is ubiquitous, each source will have different mineral contents which will impact on the brewing process.

To be fair it has been a poor beer for some time now. Made as cheaply as possible, like Doom Bar, and all the brands Marstons and Greene King own.

There's a few big brewers who can produce good quality in large volumes (Castle Rock, Fullers), but most of them churn out pish.

Newcastle Brown Ale stopped being Newcastle Brown Ale when they moved brewing to the Federation Brewery then to Tadcaster. 90% of beer is water. Water has a huge impact on the taste.

Using shitey hop extracts instead of proper hops doesn't help either.

It's great how many microbreweries there are now making stuff properly.

My grandad worked on the brewing side at Camerons, and when he retired used to brew his own 'from the grain'. I'm really glad that he lived long enough to sample all the good quality stuff from smaller brewers in the late 2000s, I reckon it kept him going a couple of extra years.

Went to a beer festival last week, indoors it were, at Newcastle Uni, or it may have been Northumbria. Young lad I worked with asked what would it be like, I said it would be fucking hot and stink and there would no decent fanny, I was right on all counts

All the beer tasted of well, beer

The young lad got mashed on super strong beer, which tasted like the other beers, beer tasting beer

Missed last Metro home, had to get a taxi home, £18

Beer festivals can fuck right off

Beer festivals are ace if you go to the right ones.

I want beer to taste of beer, not pumpkin or cardamoms or pineapple or whatever else these 'craft' nobheads are peddling nowadays.

Even my HP sauce is now made in Holland, it does taste different to me, gives me heartburn! So bought Daddies instead..... It's made in Poland now.

A mate of mine won a four-pack of Kentish artisanal beers in a pub quiz. Made with the finest New Zealand hops. Oh the ironing.

The water Camerons uses is from a spring in Silver Street as i remember not the stuff we get out of the tap. Silver Street is the tiny street between the old sports bar (labour club) and old CO-OP in Park Road.

Brewdog are utter chancers, their business has been built almost entirely on an ethos of bullshit and borrowing. And their 'beer' isn't even any good.

I give them a couple of years before they have to start paying back and it all comes tumbling down.

Not sure I'd buy a beer called Brewdog. It'd be a bit like Cookmouse kebabs or Freezerat ices.

For unforeseen reasons I had to drink a bottle of "Curious Brew", made from the used hops from Champagne or summit? Curiously it was weird but nice, a twist between beer and sparkling wine. Strange but nice for 1 or 2 not a session drink like.

Did you wake up jaundiced this morning?

It's just that as a teenager I lied about my age to get into the Odeon in Hartlepool to see a weird but nice Danish fillum called 'I Am Curious Brew Yellow.'

I should hope so. Thankfully you can still get a pint of proper quality locally brewed ale for around the 3 quid mark down here.

Every time I have to pay for a pint in London in somewhere other than a Sam Smiths pub a little bit of my soul dies.

Those are the kind of prices they were practising in Paris 15-20 years ago. I shudder to think how much they charge now.
And a friend of mine who'd worked in Oslo found those cheap by comparison.
A 30cl draught of Estrella averages about 1.50 euros here. A 25cl of immeasurably inferior lager in Montpellier is the neck end of 3 euros now. T'was a good move.

A pint in Norway was about £7 eighteen years ago. Bit of a shock but then I got charged £3 for a tomato and it didn't seem as bad.

I'm lucky as there's loads of twat-free pubs that sell decent beer near me, but I often struggle to find anywhere decent when I'm working away.

The worst ones are the gastropubs where the staff look at you like shit because you only want a pint, and not pay £20 for what is effectively bangers and mash because the gravy is called 'jus'.
