I have one blue eye and 1 grey eye actually. Il try closing my grey one on way home and report back.

I went to Ramside Hall last nigth and drove there with my grey eye shut and drove back with my blue eye shut.

I noticed to discernable difference.

I agree with your sentiments, Shilts, but would like to add a couple of comments.

Regarding the use of headlamps during the day, I fully understand your point. However, when I have driven on the single carriageway section of the A1 north of Newcastle, I was surprised to see how prevalent this practice was.

You will, no doubt, be aware of the signs at regular intervals stating that “X deaths/injuries had occurred in the last Y months”, highlighting its dangerous nature. These, presumably, are aimed at frustrated motorists who are looking to overtake caravans, tractors, a window cleaner on a bicycle with trailer attached who I once saw and other slow-moving traffic. Although the weather was very bright, the headlights of oncoming vehicles were highly visible in the distance.

Concerning your original gripe, in 1990 I bought my first “modern” car – an Astra estate. It was the Lab’s nads; comfortable, nippy, decent fuel consumption etc. but it had one large drawback – its headlamps. My eyes were okay as were the bulbs and reflectors and the lens were clean. I first became aware of this when leaving the M40 and driving on the minor roads on regular work visits to Didcot. Being one for carrying out my own surveys, I asked other Astra drivers at petrol stations etc. what they thought of their headlamps and to a man, they said they were fucking shit or similar.

I eventually traded it in for a Vectra estate which, after a couple of initial problems, proved to be a superb car whose large engine took the miles in its stride and was a pleasure to drive but, once again, the headlamps, although an improvement, weren’t too clever. I fitted it with a pair of illegal 100W bulbs in an attempt to improve things and mentioned this to my brother when I visited him. He had a large, very dark access road behind his back garden at the time so I parked there and he parked his bog standard Ford van next to me. Believe it or not, he was gobsmacked when he switched his sidelights on and found they were almost as bright as my headlamps. When he switched his headlamps on, it was like the Blackpool illuminations by contrast.

I was a bit of a twitcher at the time and the majority of my journeys involved long treks along country lanes to places I didn’t even know existed. Surprisingly, the opportunity to use the main beam was infrequent due to oncoming traffic. I, therefore, occasionally opted to use my front fog lamps in an attempt to increase the light shining on the grass verges etc. So, although I agree with the general tenor of your post, under those circumstances, I would happily admit to being a “Four Light Wanker”.

Finally, there is a question that I have asked many times and have never really received a convincing reply. When I first took an interest in my headlamps, I noticed that those from oncoming vehicles adequately lit my side of the road, whereas as soon as they had passed, I was left with my own and it emphasised how piss-poor they were. Now, as our lamps are angled to the left to avoid dazzle and provide maximum illumination to the kerbside, these other vehicles appeared to offer a decent spread across the carriageway whereas my paltry bastards offered bugger all. Or is it all an illusion? A friend suggested that there was a recent line of thought that light might travel in pulses rather than waves but could not expand on it.

Nice one! Hardly a good advert for Vauxhall, that's for sure.

Incidentally, does anyone on here drive a 'recent' Vauxhall and, if so, how good are their headlights these days?
