The ship is sinking, most of the crew have decided to get into the rubber dinghies but the luddites are fixing leaks with wallpaper paste and believe it’ll work. When the water is up to their chests, they rush up on deck and see everyone else in the dinghies and have a massive melt down.
“Come and join us” the few in the dinghies shout, but the luddites look down in disgust and point out it’s a shitty little dinghy, we have a fine ship. A voice from the dinghies shouts “ Pretty soon the only thing the afloat around here will be the dinghies, so it’s dinghies or the seabed, now join us or drown”.

Calling these people luddites is an insult to luddites. They were courageous fighters against crooked bosses at a time when forming a union was illegal. They also loved a good alaogy.

Er, not mixing them up with Tolpuddle Martyrs by any chance.....?
My take on on the Luddites was people who couldn’t cope with change, understandable when it may cost you your job. But, snmashing up the new machinery was never going to stop ‘progress’ and it didn’t.
My use of the word was those who when faced with the bleeding inevitable just long for things to be how they used to be and they were swept away anyway. The key word being adapt to new circumstances.

No mix up Snowy, they formed a union and got deported for it.

The luddites opposed pay cuts in the textile industry. New looms made the stocking makers' job loads easier and reduced the demand for their skills. Some bosses basically said great we can produce more goods but others went on the offensive over pay. Unions were illegal so the best option was to break into the factory and wreck the machines - effectively causing a strike but without forming a union. They would leave a list of demands, signed by Ned Ludd or Captain Ludd, and they hardly ever included getting rid of the looms and a fair number of the places they attacked didn't even have the new looms, just a reputation for treating workers very badly.

Didn't go down well with the establishment of the time so the luddites were demonised as thick gets who opposed change. Unsurprisingly, the version of events that makes ordinary people out to be thick and destructive ended up in the history books.

Here endeth today's sermon on history from below.

Well, there's electricity for a start.........
If people 200 years ago could see the problem, it doesn't say about the intelligence of succeeding generations then with all their massive advantages.
