Sad but not entirely surprising. Top performer who will probably get the respect he deserves in another ten years or so after somebody makes an arty biopic that he would have denounced as shite.

Gutted, loved The Fall, loved Smith, unstoppable on a good night (was lucky to see them relatively early on..81-82 era) and brilliantly frustrating on others.

A National Treasure...a description he would have hated!

Dreadful news.

Haven't seen him live since early 80's but some of his great tunes have been part of my playlist for more than a third of the century!

I had the pleasure of wrestling with Smith in Glasgow in 2000. Me and some workmates saw him in a bar and went to chat with him. He was friendly and very funny. We all went on to the Scotia Bar for late night beer and pool and the back to a friend’s flat. At this point Smith produced a bag of powder and snorted the lot. He decided I was a “Nazi” and wanted to fight. After much rolling about we managed to kick him out on to the man streets of Glasgow at about 5am. A talent, for sure, I’m surprised he lived so long.

This is what a friend of mine said about him.

"Supported the Fall in Antwerp some years ago. MES was really friendly, I had a good reception, then The Fall came on and played non stop, literally no breaks and more or less the same thing, for about an hour. Mark went round detuning the band’s instruments and half demolishing the drum kit. Then afterwards we were relaxing backstage and the promoter came in apologetically saying we had to leave cos Mark wanted to talk to the band. A few minutes later we heard him shouting at them at the top of his voice.....
Whether or not you are a fan (I like the odd bit here and there) there really was only one MES"
