England fullback, top bloke by all accounts and one of the best match summarisers Sports Report ever had.

Will miss his Lancashire accent and footballing common sense.

Always enjoyed listening to Jimmy Armfield on 5 Live he will be missed and hopefully the channel will rerun the story of his career which was aired last year.

Fascinating listen and a great story.

RIP Jimmy

It's a good listen. Just got to the 66 World Cup. For winning it, the members of the England squad got a bonus of £1,000 each - and paid £764 tax on it!
Different times - they never even discussed money before or during the tournament.

The national side will never get close to replicating that genuine pride in wearing the effing shirt again. In fact, the last time England got to the semi-finals of the World Cup was two years before the Premier League was formed. What a coincidence!

Very sad news. Jimmy was an informative, incisive pundit and by all accounts a lovely bloke too.

Great player , great commentator. As a Leeds fan as a kid , always remember him as the bloke who took over from Clough, and to be fair did an okay job for a year or two, steadying a sinking ship, got them to Euro cup final, after which Pools became my first and only club.

In 1993 I flew back on FA Cup 3rd day fro a ski-ing holiday. Got off plane and was treated to Jimmy Armfield on expert analysis with Alan Green as BBC 5 Live said the immortal words we go over to the Victoria ground for live commentary, of what was then only the second half for Hartlepool v Crystal Palace. He talked about the rudimentary commentary box, the cold, the vociferous crowd and a resolute McPhail and Gilchrist. He felt Saville had a touch and some ability. He was a good judge.

RIP Jimmy condolences to his family.
