It's hard to imagine the amount of abuse and condescension he had to put up with as a player. This season a third of all professional footballers in England are black - when Cyril and Viv Anderson were in the spotlight they were virtually on their own.

The abuse they all took was awful and embarrassing for the country. It would have been much fairer for those giving out the abuse to die young.

Great player. WBA in late 70s were a joy , not just the token black player but 3, Regis , Batson, Cunningham.

That game when they won 5-3 at Man U , was as good as the Liverpool/City game yesterday.

The Three Degrees at their absolute finest here. Dodgy perms, dodgy defending, dodgy pitch, goals festooned in lavy rolls, but what a game! I got to see the West Bromwich Albion team of the late 70's early 80's a few times and they were magnificently entertaining.
